Strange mod found on Atari joystick connections?

As stated before, I'm not an electronics expert, but I have a light-sixer with that appears to be some sort of fix or mod. I'm guessing it's a mod because I see the same thing on both controller connections.

It looks like someone applied a diode to pin 5 (or it might be pin 9). Anyone know what this might be?

That's the "mandatory" static-discharge protection mod for six-switchers found in the Field Service Manual. This is the first time I've ever seen one that I didn't perform myself. Its presence means that the console was previously serviced, by someone who did what they were supposed to (I've opened up lots of consoles with the red "Atari Service" stickers, that didn't have the mod. Seeing this would raise my confidence that this previously performed service was done well.

BTW, it's pin 6 (joystick fire).
