badbrad
I just picked up an Atari XEGS in the box, probably paid too much, whatever. Does the XEGS play all Atari computer carts, without a translator like the 800xl? there's not too many posts here about the XEGS, does anyone here have one? How are they for gaming? Goochman
The XEGS will be as compatible as the XL system
liquid_sky
i have one in the box, pretty worthless without a disk drive or any carts
krisjohn
I have a XEGS and an 800XL and for what I've done with them so far they're more or less identical. I've got a SIO2PC cable and the games that play on one play on the other and the ones that don't play on one don't play on the other. They're even identical when it comes to the crappy PAL output that my WinTV USB adapter can't sync to, dammit. There are only two major functional differences I've noticed. The XEGS has a game built-in and the 800XL has an expansion port at the back. Not that I've spent much time exploring either.
badbrad
Does it just use a standard atari disk drive? I have an 800xl, but no disk drive. Brad
krisjohn
Does it just use a standard atari disk drive? Yes, all the accessories for the 800XL and XEGS are compatible, including the light gun if I recall correctly. The 800XL and the XEGS both use the same CPU, have the same basic logic design and have the same amount of RAM. You'd think that by the time the XEGS was released it'd be upgraded from the 800XL, but out of the box they're pretty much identical. In fact, the expansion slot I mentioned previously actually makes the 800XL better than the XEGS, but only for expansion options, not for basic stuff. Rob Mitchell
XEGS lightgun is what you need to play 2600/7800 light gun games! Rob Mitchell, Atlanta, GA
Brian R.
i have one in the box, pretty worthless without a disk drive or any carts It's not totally worthless. Missile Command is built-in. Just turn it on without the keyboard attached or a cart plugged in.
Shawn Jefferson
It's not totally worthless. Missile Command is built-in. Just turn it on without the keyboard attached or a cart plugged in. Don't you have to hold down Select when you turn it on to get Missile Command? IIRC.
aminerva
YOu only have to hold down select if the keyboard is attached. If no keyboard is attached, it boots straight to Missile Command.
