WERY
I was recently done with an AV-mod on my Odyssey 2 and both sound and picture on it works great. In that fact I'm going to celebrate my success by starting collecting the 5200 SuperSystem and it is the 4-port version that is of interest to me. Now I dont like the switchbox that goes way beyond all twisted weirdness so I will modify the console. The reason why I start this thread is cause I like to have a guide on how to do this mod and with schematics over the videoamplifier which I am going to build(the spring this year I modified a 7800 ProSystem for AV). Having a similiar way to AV-modify this console would be desired a lot of me. I took a look and found this guide on how to modify the power output so that question is settled except for details on the components that are to replace the old powerunit http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/20871-atari-5200-4-port-power-modification-warning-big/ All given help and support is welcome

If you are a DIYer he will likely have a bare board for sale for under $5. What O2 mod did you use? Link? I have been needing to do one for a while. WERY
Here is the mod When you modify an Odyssey 2 you build the AV-card like this: For a sharp picture, use a 100nF capacitor between +5V and GND When you modify a Videopac G7000, do like this: To lower the strong color a 270pF capacitor is connected from Video-In to GND. If you do this on an Odyssey 2, the color will vanish and the picture gets extremely bad so don not mix the schematics with each other Here is the RF-modulator. I will remove the curcuitboard inside the shield and replace it with the AV-card that I am building Had to solder for a while to remove the RF-modulator Now the AV-card is put inside the RF-shield and on the subside of the board there are rubberfeet that will protect the circuit from getting in contact with the metallic case. One cable from the circuit is soldered to the case for GND and another one goes from the case to the GND on the RCA jacks. Once finished, the case is back on the place it belongs and screwed with the GND cable from the mobo. The trimpot must be on the lowest level to get satisfactory picture In the beginning it was maxed and the picture got bad but now it is good. I use Crypo-Logic to test the color and sharpness in picture and it works great now Also tried with the PAL version of Pickaxe Pete and it shows a good picture I recently saw another mod that could be done, probably only to the G7000 but is was far more complicated with more resistors etc so I highly recomend this one, at least for the Odyssey 2. I don not have a Videopac and have newer used one so my experince stands with the Odyssey 2. But that other guide has information on how to modify the G7000 for RGB Hope someone knows a similiar AV-mod for the 5200 SuperSystem so I can make it simplelike in this mod

WERY
Found this mod in the FAQs. Any hints on it? 4.13 - CHROMA/LUMA (COMPOSITE VIDEO) AND AUDIO OUTPUT MODIFICATION ------------------------------------------------------------------ Differences between 2-port and 4-port consoles: Not surprisingly, there are very few appreciable differences between the 2-port and 4-port variations of the 5200. For the purposes of this article, they are considered to be identical. Where to get signals: Most of the components do not have visible labels on the board's silkscreen, so giving component numbers is not useful. In the upper right corner of the area of the board that's covered by the shielding, there is a horizontal row of components. o o o o o o o o o o o o | | | | | | | | | | | | C R3 R2 R1 D R R R R R R R | | | | | | | | | | | | o o o o o o o o o o o o ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ | | | | | `-Chroma | | | | `----Luma 1 | | | `-------Sync | | `----------Luma 0 | `-------------Luma 2 `----------------Luma 3 There is a row of components to the right of the GTIA (C014805) and below a cluster of inductors and transistors. o o o o o o o o o o o | | | | | | | | | | | R40 R R R R R C R R C C | | | | | | | | | | | o o o o o o o o o o o ^ `--Audio Luma output: The Luma signal needs amplification to be useful. After probing around on an Atari 800 (a close relative to the 5200 that conveniently has Croma/Luma outputs built-in), I realized the amplifier circuit they used is remarkably similar to the one attributed to Thomas Clancy in the Classic Atari Game Systems FAQ. Rather than try to copy the circuit on the Atari 800 or design one from scratch, I decided to use the one given there. The only significant difference is the addition of another level of luminance. On my own 5200, I ran the chroma through a 2kohm resistor to "take the edge off," then a 1uF capacitor to filter the DC voltage off. Play around with the resistance there to find what suits you. RCA jack 1uF __ Audio ------|(-----------------------------------------O__ AUDIO | OUTPUT GND \/ Composite video output: To gain composite output, just tie the Luma and Chroma outputs together into a single output. ApolloBoy
Found this mod in the FAQs. Any hints on it? That was the mod I performed on my 5200, and it looks great!
WERY
Then I shall do that mod. I draw a painting of the schematics and the result is this: Am I right or wrong? Next question: If I keep Luma-Out and Chroma-Out apart, will that give me S-Video? If I can get S-Video that way, I will make both Composite-Video and S-Video output on the console in order to get the posibility to choose between them

And yes, if you separate the chroma and luma signals, you will get S-video, just so long as you wire them up to the corresponding pins on the S-video jack. WERY
That sounds great I will then put up both C-Video and S-Video on the console Perhaps there is some kind of schematics on the S-Video output? In case there is I could just simply follow that one when connecting and soldering the wires
WERY
I have just removed C45, L8 and the RFcable from the console and will in about 10-12 hours visit a store that has electronicparts for my modification. About the spot from where I get the Lumasignals I would like to see a picture of it so I can recognise it when I take a look inside the RF-shielding. There might be other questions up here soon to straight things out
WERY
Been working all day with this mod and is almost done with it. I still have to drag some wires around and connect these in the right places. The AV baord is done. All I have to do is connecting it to the sound and picturecables and a +5V. Does anyone got any hint on where to find that voltage? I really could use hints on it so I know where to look. Maybe it can be obtained from the VR1 or VR2 transistors but I dont know for sure yet as I still need to finish to power mod. the jacks are put in place so pretty soon, this work will be done
WERY
Done System works now and it looks like both AV and Powermod was succesful. I will summon the guide istself and post her later Now I got to get a working controller to play with Edited November 11, 2010 by WERY
