What controllers work with Scrapyard Dog?

Okay guys, ever since I got my Atari 7800 a few years back, I got a copy of Scrapyard Dog, mainly because its one of the few side-scrollers for the Atari 7800. So, the game is good, but the controller is horrendous, and is NOT meant for side-scrollers. I would use a normal Atari controller, but SD (Scrapyard Dog) requires two buttons, so the normal joystick is out of the question. I tried the Sega Genesis controller, but what happens, is that no matter what I do, on the title screen, the game doesn't respond to me. However, if I get in the game with the normal joystick, and then plug the game back in, the d-pad works fine, but the C button jumps, and it's really delayed; your character (Whom is called Louie), will jump AFTER you let go of the button, and it's always at a predetermined height. With a normal controller, you have complete control over your jumping height (which is called player control, for those in the dark). I have an Amiga Power Stick, which has two buttons, but the same thing happens.

 

And so, I do not feel like playing the whole game through with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and I plan to buy a European 7800 controller (which is like an NES controller). But before I buy, does anyone know if the Euro-controller will work on Scrapyard Dog, or any NTSC 2600/7800 games for that matter? If not, are there any alternatives to the normal, painful American Atari 7800 controllers?

It will work, but it isn't great. I recommend an NES conversion pad.

Pretty sure the Sega strangeness you're getting is due to the sega pad not being 100% compatible. If you want to use that with this game, you'll need to modify it (or use an adapter) to get 100% compatibility.

Where do I get an NES conversion pad? Does it work really well for SD?

Pretty sure the Sega strangeness you're getting is due to the sega pad not being 100% compatible. If you want to use that with this game, you'll need to modify it (or use an adapter) to get 100% compatibility.

 

I'm not a techie, and I don't know how to modify a controller, OR where to buy an adapter.

That's what I was asking to see if it worked better. I know what they look like.
