CastleofIllusion
My brother's friend brought over his dad's Sega Genesis over today because he knew I was into old games. I plugged it in and and put the only game he had into it, the console boots the little black screen with "Sega Productions" but does not move from this screen. I've cleaned the game's connectors and consoles, but to no avale. I opened up the system and found 1 capacitor that was loose inside with the insides of the cap all over the board. Could this be the only reason that the game doesn't boot?
jferio
That might well be. Replace that cap at bare minimum. My personal recommendation would be to replace ALL the caps. If one's popped, the rest might not be far behind.

bust3dstr8
Unless there is a special attachment to this particular console it won't be cost effective to repair. On top of the two way shipping, caps, and labor there is probally trace corosion that is causing the game to not boot. These address lines would all need to be cleaned up, checked and repaired also. I would just donate it to someone that can use it for parts.
+thegoldenband
You could always just replace the one capacitor, clean up the board a bit, and see how things go. Otherwise I agree with bust3dstr8 -- definitely don't trash it, since there are tons of people who would love to have it for parts. (Meanwhile if you need to buy a new Genesis, there are plenty of people who are selling them, including me -- I have an extra VA6 Model 1 with one controller and no power supply, so if you've already got a power supply it'd be a good match. PM me if you're interested.)
Armonigann
Just buy a working Genesis and use the broken one for a show piece..
