doubleminor
I remember this mostly in the 16-bit days when chains like BB would rent out consoles. Always wanted to rent a Genesis since the family had NES consoles, but never got around to it. I found this on ebay: eBay Auction -- Item Number: 251015020259
NE146
I rented a Playstation when it first came out along with Battle Arena Tonshiden since I wasn't able to find it at the stores yet.. And yes it did indeed come in that hard plastic case.
R.Cade
I rented a Saturn once with a few games for a weekend to check it out.
+FujiSkunk
One weekend while home from college, I rented a PlayStation so I could get my DarkStalkers fix. Emulated arcade games were just starting to come out around then, so I rented Midway Arcade's Greatest Hits as well and enjoyed arcade-quality Joust and Defender for the first time in years. It was a fun experience, though I think I remember Blockbuster being rather pricey with their console rentals. Funny thing, some time after that weekend I checked out the console rentals at a Blockbuster close to college. While the college campus itself was fairly safe, the area around it was definitely not high rent. This Blockbuster's rental prices were the same as home, but they required something like a $200 deposit as well. They weren't taking any chances! With that kind of money for a deposit, might as well put it in a jar until the system finally came out.
+Atari_Warlord
I remember renting a NES from blockbuster once while in college because I really wanted to play double dragon. At the time I couldn't afford to buy the system.

Austin
Those rental cases pop up quite frequently. Would be nice to have a few of those.
Shannon
I've seen those before! I even picked up one designed for the Dreamcast. I have two of them (picked up from a used game store). Anywho the second one I'm not sure what it was intended to hold.
Asaki
Yeah, my uncle used to rent an SNES sometimes back when he would stay with us for the winter.
King_Salamon
That's where I rented the Virtual Boy... I thought the case was pretty sweet. As for the Virtual Boy... I did buy one a few months after on clearance for dirt cheap.
BillyHW
The only system I wanted to rent was the Neo Geo, but I never ended up doing it.
MagitekAngel
I fondly remember a few N64 system rentals. That was when I really sank my teeth into Super Mario 64 and Shadows of the Empire for the first time.
Rex Dart
Yeah, those carrying cases are cool and turn up from time to time on eBay. I just wonder about the condition of the foam inside. I rented a PS1 and Virtual Boy from blockbuster, yeah. Genesis and SNES from a local place called Fred's Video. Don't think I ever rented any other systems, though. NightSprinter
Rented an SNES once from my hometown's (now former) local "Videos Unlimited" chain with my older brother. But mostly during the early 90s I rented the Genesis at Blockbuster and then went to Phar-Mor to take advantage of their weekend game rental deal (3 for a buck a pop? Hell yeah).
