boxpressed
I have what seems to be a non-functioning 5200 switch box. It doesn't "click" when the power line is attached, and the 5200 does not power on with the red LED. Is there a way to tell visually if the box is kaput? Below is a photo of the PCB. fernando marrin
You will have to take out your multimeter for a ride... But power mods for 4 port 5200's are so easy and convenient to do that i don't see the point in fixing that.
boxpressed
Hmm. That's interesting. As of now, I have three four-port 5200s and only one working switchbox! Do you have to remove the RF shield to do the power mod?

Do you have to remove the RF shield to do the power mod? For the power mod, I don't think you have to remove the shield. I removed the shield from mine a long time ago and never put it back on. I doesn't seem to have any effect on the system.
Charlie_
And here is the thread to do the power mod. Should be all you need. http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/20871-atari-5200-4-port-power-modification-warning-big/
boxpressed
Great! Thanks so much. This mod might be just the right amount of difficulty for my novice skills. Is there an online retailer that might stock all of the necessary components? Edited May 27, 2012 by boxpressed
ApolloBoy
Is there an online retailer that might stock all of the necessary components? Look around Mouser or Digi-Key.

I had the same experience. U1 chip on the switch box is damage. Change that and the box will fire up again, in a local electric component shop you can easly find that chip (LM393N) Edited May 29, 2012 by g40rocket
