Greg2600
As I recall, most of the population was still calling them "tapes" at that point. Ha ha yes they were! My parents referred to the 2600 games as tapes. Wow, that literally jostled a memory I hadn't thought of in 25 years. If you go farther back, on Star Trek, they called what were clearly cartridge looking devices data tapes.
IHATETHEBEARS
I love this movie. Back in the day I had it on a Beta tape. And now I've had it on DVD for years. As a kid, I LONGED to have that video game. It looked like a lot of fun. It would be awesome to see someone release it for the community. Here in NJ, I never heard them referred to as tapes. They were always cartridges...games on cassette were referred to as tapes...that's all as far as I can remember.

I've never heard them referred to as tapes until I saw this.

It was usually by adults, though, not by other kids; we always called them cartridges. I suppose it depends on who you spent more time with. Apparently, there were also some people who called them by both names. In one episode of MST3K ("Santa Claus Conquers the Martians", I believe it was), Frank refers to a box of Nintendo cartridges as "video cassette cartridge games". Greg2600
What is this the NJ only thread? I too am from NJ, still am, and like I said, my parents and grandparents called them tapes. Was usually in the vein of, "hey you left your tapes here."
Charlie_
I'm in New jersey too. I remember older people calling them tapes. We (kids) called them cartridges.
jaybird3rd
Wow, who knew that New Jersey had an "official" video game console?! (I'm not sure which of the two comes out the worse from that particular pairing: the state of New Jersey, or the Atari 5200.)
Retro Rogue
They were collectively called tapes, cartridges, and cassettes depending on people's inclination towards the previous technology they were used to. For example - Tape: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=T4UgAAAAIBAJ&sjid=0tgEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2737,4533621&dq=atari+tape&hl=en Cassette http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=6K8lAAAAIBAJ&sjid=H_QFAAAAIBAJ&pg=1848,2535505&dq=atari+cassette&hl=en Cartridge http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=ZnpQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=KRIEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3019,3041601&dq=atari+cartridge&hl=en
Brian O
Another New Jerseyan checking in. Born here, still here, will probably die here. Great, now I have Mellencamp's "Small Town" stuck in my head... -B
TwiliteZoner
They were collectively called tapes, cartridges, and cassettes depending on people's inclination towards the previous technology they were used to. For example - Tape: http://news.google.c...tari tape&hl=en Cassette http://news.google.c... cassette&hl=en Cartridge http://news.google.c...cartridge&hl=en So in other words people that actually knew what they were talking about and not just some casual observer knew that they were called cartridges. If I had to bet I would imagine that whoever wrote the script for Cloak & Dagger had only a passing interest in the hobby. Chuck D. Head
I'd call it a "guilty pleasure". Any movie with Dabney Coleman in it is a guilty pleasure. Going through a box of my dad's VHS tapes I found two tapes full of "Buffalo Bill" with Dabney Coleman and have been watching them with pleasure. Very different and funny, with a great cast. I remember him from "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" as a kid and thought he was the best part of the show. I just found Cloak and Dagger at a garage sale this summer, but havent watched it yet, thanks for the reminder!
Atari the Jedi
I grew up in California and my parents and grandparents referred to them as simply "games" though my grandma has been know to refer every thing video games even modern systems as "pick up those dam Ataris"

thegamezmaster
Thanks for the link. Is it for Atari 400/800 only or is there a 5200 zip file? Would love to try on a 5200. Just asking as I have no way for an A8. Again thanks for everyone's help. Edited November 15, 2012 by thegamezmaster
Greg2600
400/800 only. Don't think a 5200 version was worked on yet.
Tempest
400/800 only. Don't think a 5200 version was worked on yet. Correct. The 5200 version would have come out after the 8-bit version was finished.
Coleco
So, I guess I'm not clear: Is someone still working on the 5200 version of this, or did they abandon that effort?
