NightSprinter
So, was playing Gauntlet in Steam Engine and was selecting which character to go for (Wizard, as he's been my staple since the NES days). I noticed something interesting when pressing left/right on the keyboard: options for "MIDI JOY0" and "MIDI JOY1" were given to somehow allow four players. Was there a special adapter for the MIDI ports mentioned in the manual? If so, this would mean it was the first four-player home version before "Gauntlet IV" came out on the Genesis. Tempest
Yes, there was a special adapter that allowed for four players. I've never seen it though.
NightSprinter
Damn, that was fast Tempest. I'll have to look into ordering a copy for my STE in the next few weeks and see what this adapter is. I know the parallel joystick option in Steem didn't work. sh3-rg
Gauntlet II Here's some infos on multitap: http://www.atari-forum.com/wiki/index.php?title=Multitap_Games http://atari4ever.free.fr/hardware/others.html
+DarkLord
I've got one of those adaptors. Used it with Gauntlet 2 - didn't know that you could actually use it with the first one. 4 players on a 12" SC1224 monitor gets a bit crowded but its lots of fun, especially during the "tag" sections. NightSprinter
DarkLord, the adapter Gauntlet 1 refers to seems to be entirely different from the parallel port one you refer to.
+DarkLord
Yes, hence the "MIDI" reference. However, has *anyone* seen or used one with the original Gauntlet? Does anyone remember it being advertised as a 4 player game? I don't have the greatest memory in the world, but I don't. Anyone got any old ads about the original game from back then? Be interesting to see those... Love to see some pictures and specs... One programmer over at AtariAge (Klaz) who is doing updates on older games so that they run on newer/faster Atari's, run from hard disk, and in many instances add a trainer/score screen, has stated that he can't find any 4 player code in the original Gauntlet. http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=22190 Also, I remember someone else trying the Gauntlet 2 adaptor with Gauntlet 1, and it didn't work (not that surprising, as you mentioned, it is for the parallel port). Sure wish it would have.
Tempest
However, has *anyone* seen or used one with the original Gauntlet? Does anyone remember it being advertised as a 4 player game? You're right, I was thinking of Gauntlet II
oky2000
I have the original game with instructions so will check but for a fact I know it was never mentioned on the box (and I don't think on the adverts either). Actually does anyone know of a good magazine that reviewed this game? Preferably multi-format like CVG please ta.
calimero
I just found: 4JOY_ADA.ZIP (I+E) How to make the 4-joystick adapter for Gauntlet II, Leatherneck" http://atari4ever.free.fr
NightSprinter
We've discussed that adapter already. It's not for Gauntlet 1. I'll take a screenshot after work and a local meetup with some friends from STEem Engine to demonstrate what I refer to.
NightSprinter
This is what I was talking about. Sorry it took so long to upload. Working and some car troubles. Gauntlet_003.bmp Gauntlet_004.bmp
