kensu
Just out of curiosity, where is the XM project getting its POKEY chips from? Are 5200s all over the country waking up in ice-filled bathtubs and finding their POKEY chips missing?
jaybird3rd
I can't claim any "insider knowledge", but I suspect that the number of 7800XMs being produced is small relative to the number of surplus POKEY chips that are still available. Remember that POKEY was used in many more machines than the 5200; it was used in the 400/800 computer series, and also in coin-operated arcades, some of which used more than one POKEY. Extra POKEY chips were produced as spare parts for all of these machines, and there are still lots of them left.

Jaynz
Well, I made sure to snag a Ballblazer cart this week... just in case Albert or someone here comes after it to scrounge the POKEY!
jaybird3rd
There's also a pokey inside every Ball Blazer and Commando cartridge. Yes. I've disassembled and sold a few hundred Ballblazer cartridge boards specifically for the POKEY chips. Those are harder to "recycle", though, since they're soldered onto the board.
