SMS controllers on 7800

I'm thinking on bidding on a pair of Epyx joysticks for the Sega Master System that are on eBay at present. My question is: will these work on an Atari 7800 and support both buttons?

 

If the controllers require modification, is there someone on here who would be willing to perform the modification? I'm not the most adept with a soldering gun and would rather pay to have someone perform the modifications.

I'm pretty sure you won't get two independent fire buttons to work. AA member Golden Ax sells modded NES pads for the 7800, and I imagine he can mod the NES Advantage too.

Having personally wired the Space Invaders stick for the 7800, as well as two copies for my Master System... no, it won't work without modification. I also don't know enough about the Epyx stick to know if it's doable as an easy mod... or if it requires deep surgery on the PCB itself.

Sega Genesis controllers work on the Atari XL and 2600, at least for the B & C buttons. Might also work for the 7800. The C button is read from the usual strig(0) while B button is paddle(0)

Master system controllers will work with both buttons if you swap a couple of lines. You can build a pretty simple adapter, if you just look up the pinout for both systems.

Unfortunately, Genesis controllers don't work for two-button 7800 games.

 

I have a Genesis pad that does work with my 7800, but that's because I got in there and made it into one that does.

Interesting... you can go the opposite route without modification.

 

That is...you can use a 7800 controller and get two independent buttons for use on an SMS or PBC on a Genesis. I used to play my SMS version of Montezuma's revenge using a 7800 painline controller.
