+grips03
I have Atari 7800 with Longhorn s-video mod v2.1B I just got Commando cart and its works great, but screen is greenish. I then adjusted TV set's Hue (adjust green and red tones) to R50 and Color (adjust color saturation) to 75. Now screen looks good. I then tried to make these adjustments to the 7800 itself as I use the S-video port for many consoles. I saw R-57 (to bottom of cart slot) and R-58 (right below R-57). Pot at R-57 changes the screen, but it does not do what TV's Hue control does. Pot at R-58 does not seem to change anything. Anyone know what this does? Is there some other place to adjust hue on the console? Edited November 27, 2013 by grips03
AtariBrian
Not sure, but I have a stock 7800 somewhere and if I remember right commando is green like with the mod . So maybe its possible that a fix could be made in the console somehow .
gorfcadet
Lol. Will someone just color hack Commando already? The grass will also look different after your system warms up a bit too, The programmers picked a very problematic pallet for the 7800 version of this game. I wouldn't go adjusting your set based on this game; it will only end in tears.
Trebor
The pot adjustment for the 7800 does not adjust like a tint/hue adjustment for a television. The pot adjustment inside the 7800 manages the blue to red and blue to green ratio. Turning the pot inside the 7800 one way will add more blue to red and less blue to green while turning in the opposite direction will add more blue to green and less blue to red. If you are playing Commando on a modern flat panel display it will likely always look more greenish due to the way the modern displays handle the 7800 signal (Regardless if it is RF, Composite or S-Video mod). The worst impacted is Hue 1x (looks green/green-yellow range on a modern display, but gold range on a CRT). Warm-up will not change this as Hue 1x is not affected by phase shifting (what is referred to as system 'warm-up'). Hue 1x is the range value used for all the 'dirt' areas of Commando. Hue 14x (E$) and Hue 15x (F$) are the most impacted by system warm-up/phase shifting. Regardless, your best bet for proper colors on the 7800 is to view it on a CRT if possible. While adjusting the tint/hue on a modern flat panel display helps to an extent for some games, remember the effect is to the entire palette, so some things may look too reddish or brown when they should not. Here is Commando on a CRT and an LCD: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/206923-ntsc-color-palette-crt-tv-default-tuning-varieties/page-2?do=findComment&comment=2699592 The results are not an exception but the rule. The LCD results also appear similar on a Plasma and LED display. The second pot adjustment inside the 7800 is the pot adjustment for the 2600 (mode). The 2600 pot adjustment inside the 7800 and on an actual 2600 console manually adjusts the phase shifting. You can read a complete breakdown of the Atari consoles' colors/palettes and how they are affected by the displays they appear on here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/216590-stella-gets-some-new-clothes/page-4?do=findComment&comment=2845568
+grips03
for some reason my CRT and LCD both give the greenish screen, I guess I'll just keep adjusting the TV when putting in this game, as it sounds like there is no way to adjust the console to correct.
