What's your favourite substitute controller?

As awesome as the CX-40 Joystick Controller is, I know it can be susceptible to some wear and tear, especially when playing intense games like The Activision Decathlon. Is there a controller that you like to use in place of the joystick on the 2600?

For games like The Activision Decathlon, I would probably use a Track and Field controller instead of another joystick. But for other games, my next choice after the CX-40 is usually the Epyx 500XJ, or one of the Wico joysticks.

Hands down, Wico Command Control with the bat-shaped stick. My favorite joystick of all time. I use it everywhere I can, even on my PC and SMS/Genesis for one-button games. And, bonus, the pair I have that I grew up using both still work.

Wico Command Stick is my main Atari controller that lasted fro many years, used from 2600 to ST.

 

Other controlers were Sega Master System gamepad for 8 direction games (ie Yars) and 2600 TracBall for certain games that don't need exact precision.

I usually use a Quickshot II Plus joystick or a Genesis 6 button controller. I prefer the smaller size of the 6 button controller over the larger 3 button version.

As a kid I loved the Wico Boss. Now, as an adult, it is slightly too small for my hands, so I got a Wico Command Control Contour style grip. It's the same style as the Boss, but larger. Love it.

The Epyx 500XJ.....

 

 

......ranks right up there with it, for me.

 

The TAC-2 is good for lefties, but since I'm not one, the lefty fire button sometimes gets hit inadvertently; I need to disable it.

 

The 500XJ is really nice, but for real shoot-em-ups (Galaga-style shooting) the fire finger gets kind of tired. But for stuff like Pacman - or stuff with a moderate amount of firing - it's incredible and the best. As an aside, the 500XJ is also available for NES and Master System. On the Master System, it's more of a boon than it is on the Atari, because the Atari has so many other fine controllers and the Master System has so few, and the D-pad on the Master System controller sucks.

Another vote for the Genny. I refer to the CX-40 as the crippler. Tac-2 is Ok if it was bigger.

I used to favor the PS2 dual shock controller, for precise control without wearing out my hands..

 

 

Right now, I am mostly using a microswitch controller made in Greece by a company called CMS:

 

 

I still prefer the CX-40 with a Stick Stand for Pac-Man games, and I use the Starplex controller for Asteroids-type games (like Star Castle).
