The King of Fighters along with the likes of Tekken are both celebrating their 30th anniversaries this year, and there's a lot of legacy to look back on.

As part of the festivities, SNK is continuing to reveal concept art and share posters for the early KOF games now ranging from '94 through 2003.

This is the second time we've gotten to feature this classic artwork where we were previously able to compare the original ending art drafts to their final in-game conclusions.

We aren't going to be going over all of the individual pieces here now, but the gallery is put together in terms of the game releases in chronological order.

That way you can see an evolution of the series as it happened, how characters like Kyo and Athena evolved over the early years and when the second main generation including K', Maxima, Kula, and more were added to the NESTS era.

Another part of the celebrations is SNK dropping the price of King of Fighters 15 by 80% though there's only a few days left to claim the good deal.

The developer is planning 30 releases / pieces of content for 30 years of KOF with the next part featuring phone wallpapers and stickers starting on September 13, and there's still 25 we don't know of yet.

You can check out two dozen pieces of classic King of Fighters art below, and a bit more information on the individual works can be found on the KOF 30th anniversary X/Twitter page.

I love to see the high quality that KOF's sketches and artistic concept have.

I remember spending a lot of time analyzing and delighting me seeing every small detail in that official KOF 97 poster. 😍

That's interesting to know Franjo. Seeing that you're a master of the Arts, those times analyzing and studying the details were certainly to your benefit. Now you can do a better job than the artists at SNK. :)

You're very welcome Franjo. It's always a pleasure having you on with us brother man. :)

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves developers say story is so important they'll remove character limbs or powers if needs be

Molding characters around story instead of shoehorning them into it? In a fighting game?

Consistency and believability have never been pillars of fighting game storytelling. It's not at all to say that developers don't take extra time to try to weave character threads together into meaningful tapestries, but trying to blend so many personalities and arcs while prioritizing motivation to everyone fight each other is almost a fool's errand from the get go.

NetherRealm Studios' did set a standard with their cinematic narratives that we've seen other major developers imitate, but consistency can still so quickly take a back seat to personality as soon as Tekken starts missing Heihachi or Capcom decides they don't like their current Street Fighter protagonist. That may not quite be the case when it comes to SNK's upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, as a new PlayStation Blog interview with director Hayato Konya reveals SNK is aiming to prioritize story, and they're doing so with a 25 year gap since they last put pen to paper.

The interview begins with some talk about the history of Fatal Fury, specifically how developers at SNK at the time aimed to mold the game to be similar to a cinematic experience (something we might expect nowadays, but not so likely back in 1991 when the first of the franchise emerged).

From there it touches on visual design and the updated mechanics that aim to give familiar fighters a fresh feel, two aspects we've taken a close look at in recent months.

Then Konya and Soeda turn their attention back around to storytelling, namely the fact that they're now picking up a narrative that has technically been dormant since the last Fatal Fury entry: 1999's Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

"Garou left us with a lot of homework," Konya told PlayStation. "What happened with Hotaru and her brother? What’s going on with Kain and Rock? We want to focus on telling those stories to completion and making sure that we’ve tied up all of those things. So we have a lot of work to do."

Instead of only worrying about capturing a general theme surrounding certain characters, or revamping their stories entirely, SNK appears to be molding their characters around the story and not the other way around.

"It’s been 25 years since Garou was released, and there’s a lot of people who are still playing that game now,” continues Konya. "But we consider the story very important. And if the story requires this person to lose powers, lose their arm, then so be it. Still, because this is a long-awaited game, we don’t want to change it so much that it becomes alien to people looking forward to seeing these characters again. It’s a balancing act," he concludes.

Though most of the game's initial roster has been revealed, we don't really know too much of the Southtown tale City of the Wolves will tell us. Perhaps there's a narrative-driven reason behind the transformation in Mai Shiranui's appearance?

While we will soon have some Fatal Fury content in Street Fighter to tide us over, the harsh reality is there's still a six month wait until Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves releases on April 21, 2025 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.

Street Fighter 6's next big DLC character is joining the game later this month. It won't be long now before players everywhere are able to get their hands on the mainline series' first ever guest fighter, Terry Bogard of Fatal Fury and King of Fighters fame, and there are still things we haven't quite learned about him just yet.

Capcom continues to reveal details about Mr. Bogard and his fighting style in Street Fighter 6, and through a recent article from 4Gamer divulged the first details we've heard about how Terry is going to function with Modern Controls.

The entry featured a breakdown of Terry's abilities in Street Fighter 6, which includes information about each of his special moves, supers, and the like. This article was written entirely in Japanese, but thanks to the translation work of our very own Nicholas "MajinTenshinhan" Taylor, we have the details in English to look over.

By this point, most people already know about some of Terry's unique abilities, including his special level 2 super that can be extended for more hits and damage by using Drive Gauge and an additional bar of super meter. However, one thing we haven't really heard a lot about is what Terry's tool kit looks like when Modern Controls are selected.

With Street Fighter 6's Modern Control option, players are able to get some stark advantages in battle such as doing away with complicated inputs for special moves and super attacks. In Modern, these attacks can be performed with the tap of a single button or a single direction + a single button, but the drawback is that they deal less damage and the character as a whole loses access to certain moves due to their controls being simplified.

In this case, we now learn what things Terry loses access to, and part of his loses include some very important footsies tools.

4Gamer reports that Terry completely loses access to both his standing medium kick and his crouching medium punch, both of which appear to be strong options in the neutral/footsies game. Standing medium kick is a long-range poke that acts as a swift check to stop the opponent from advancing, while crouching medium punch has been shown in various gameplay clips to be a combo starter and extender.

The article outright notes that these two omissions from Terry's move set do hurt his overall effectiveness, however, he still has the ability to use crouching medium kick in Modern and this normal is Drive cancellable making it a powerful tool in neutral in and of itself.

We found out fairly early on that Terry has a whopping seven special moves at his disposal in Street Fighter 6, but in Modern only four of them are mapped to the simple inputs. The moves that get modernized for him are Power Wave, Rising Tackle, Crack Shoot, and Power Charge, though the rest of his special moves can still be performed by doing the traditional move inputs while using Modern Controls.

Below is the direct translation from 4Gamer's article with all of the details on Modern Terry in Street Fighter 6:

Regarding Modern Controls

If you pick Modern controls for Terry, the special moves available to you are these four moves: Power Wave (special button), Rising Tackle (forward special button), Crack Shoot (back special button) and Power Charge (down special button). If you wish to use Round Wave, Quick Burn or Burn Knuckle, you will have to do the inputs.

Losing powerful neutral moves like his crouching medium punch and standing medium kick which is great for checking opponents hurts a bit, but since Terry's crouching medium kick is drive cancellable it still feels like even on Modern

Controls he's a threat in the mid-range.

As for his close range, due to the large variety of target combos and that he can use the assist button + heavy attack to use the easily hit confirmable standing heavy punch, it didn't feel like Modern really made him lose much of his combo capability or variety. For people who are interested in Terry but don't feel very confident in doing inputs, he feels like a character where Modern Controls might be a fine way to learn him.
