ownd225
Hello! I have just bought some used Atari 800 computers, and one of the 800's says 288K on the label, and I do not know if this is a special edition or not! I can provide pics if necessary. Thanks! +David_P
Axlon made such upgrades. There are a number of ramdisk programs that support that upgrade.
ownd225
It doesnt look like a mod, it literally says 288K on the label
+Stephen
No 800 left Atari with more than the three 16k ram slots filled, making a 48k machine.
_The Doctor__
It's more than likely the AXLON 288 Mosaic ram select... They sold some 800's with it installed and labeled as such but it was not from Atari that way.
ownd225
I don't think so, here are a couple pics (sorry for bad quality):
ClausB
Easy enough to open and see what boards are inside. Probably find a 10K OS, 16K RAM, 256K RAM, and 16K RAM.

Claus - did anything like this leave Atari? Pretty sweet if so.
ownd225
So would this be considered a rare console? Because I have tried to do some research and have found nothing so far...
_The Doctor__
The 288 does not appear aligned with the 800, When Axlon did the install the numbers would be perfectly straight.... unless the picture is somehow warped. It looks like someone added the card and messed up the number alignment...
kenjennings
its probably a bundle from a dealer. My original Atari 800 was 48K assembled as such by the mail-order dealer, not Atari. It came with a 16K board, and a 32K (mosaic) board.
AtariGeezer
Could be the Windhover or Byrd 288k Atari 800 memory upgrade? I did the same mod on my 1st 800... http://atariage.com/forums/topic/218598-lf-atari-800-288k-windhoverbyrd-install-docs/?do=findComment&comment=2865789 Edited November 13, 2014 by AtariGeezer

kogden
So would this be considered a rare console? Because I have tried to do some research and have found nothing so far... No. The console isn't all that rare. The 256K RAM board is not real common and an interesting find though. You might find 2 or 3 programs that will use it or use it as a RAMdisk. Software that uses extended RAM intended for 800XL/130XE will NOT use the RAM as the implementation of extended RAM on the 800 and the XL/XE machines is TOTALLY different. Unfortunately, RAM was pretty expensive when the 800 hit the streets and not near as many people bought RAM expansions thus not many people wrote software that utilized them either. Does this make your 800 a super-rare prototype worth a gazillion dollars? Nope. Does it make it a cool toy worth keeping and playing with? Yep. As for the label thing, Atari probably sold the RAM upgrade manufacturer a bunch of labels and they just printed 288K on them and replaced the label when they did the upgrade. Don't read too much into that.
