Buttons
We just found this video on youtube about the cart-based system in a Jaguar shell. Way cool and exciting! There will be a gold cart pack-in for preorders, after the system is announced. The video tells a little bit about the system (will play games comparable to Atari-PS1) and then shows a bit of video of work-in-progress of pack-in game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbFjBmVT_J4 Please watch and share your interest to support old school! Torr
Wow. I really like what this has the potential to be! I hope it does well enough to be supported for a while and not just come and be gone again like a fart in the wind.

OldSchoolRetroGamer
GUYS! I am new here and thought there was a post about it, but didn't know where it was. I looked through the link you gave and noticed that THIS video that I posted was NOT yet on that thread. I am super-psyched about it because, imo, it has been way too long for no new cartridges!! I am a big fan of the old stuff that you can drop from a building or toast on your campfire and IT WILL STILL WORK! Love the nostalgia. It keeps the "game" in "gaming". It's not about destroying your enemies while you smack-talk them; it's about HAVING FUN.

Papa
I don't think it's trying to compete with the Retron series in number of carts it will play. I think it's meant to be all new and possibly tack up some rehashes of oldy-goody stuff. Maybe something like Castlevania or Final Fight. If they let homebrew programmers have at it then it could be a great platform for original work! I think it will have it's own carts and will not be compatible with older systems. Being able to have games as good as PS only on a cart makes me think of what the Jaguar could have been if there was cheaper memory in its day. If the carts use internal SD,or micro SD they could have huge games!! I'm on board, regardless!!

It almost certainly will only play only its own games and the only sample game shown looks barely 16-bit. I guess we'll see ultimately what the capabilities are. Pricing sounds reasonable, it's just a question of how many and what quality the games will ultimately be. Regardless, it's a niche system, so the challenges are many even with the solid infrastructure around it.

Cerebrate64
Sorry to burst your bubble, but isn't a system like this pointless? It's cool to hoard carts, but why would somebody develop for this when they could acheive more success by releasing via xbox indie games and playstation? I agree that it will probably be hard for them to get Devs onboard. But I still think it's a cool idea that I'll probably buy into just to see where it goes

I would have to answer with...CARTRIDGE!!...CARTRIDGE!!...CARTRIIIIIIIIDDGE!! Imagine me saying that in the style of Benny from the Lego Movie when he gets manic about his SPACESHIP!! It's not about hoarding cartridges. It is about the appreciation of an art form. And yes, contemplating man-facilitated solid-state non-spinning things, such as game cartridges, as art should, leads me to wonder and to be curious about existence, ITSELF. Also, could you please define "success"? P.S. You are not bursting MY bubble, as I am completely confident in how I feel about cartridges. :-)
Papa
Imagine a game like Fear Effect, Castlevania: SOTN, or Assaulter on a cartridge! Cartridges last forEVER! Cooling fans go dead, thermal paste dries up, drive motors stop and the cost and power consumption of modern systems is ridiculous! I just watched several interviews concerning this system and it appears to have some pretty hefty backing. It is slated for 2016 and is to have retro controller compatibility as well as the USB controller it comes with. The pack in title, in my opinion, looks very good. It is about a cute little knight that rides different wooden horses and arms himself with several weapons on a quest to defeat a dragon that cooked all the 'taller' knights. I know it's cutesy, but I think my kids and I will like it, and so will the wife. From what I've heard they will try and bring out several standards of games from VCS all the way up to PS1. The ability to put a very large amount of ROM space on a cartridge exists today, so I don't think that big 3D games like, say..Tomb Raider: Last Revelation, or Resident Evil are out of the question. Those licenses may be out, but games that equal them in graphics and gameplay I don't think are too much of a stretch for this. It will probably have some suped up ARM processor (fanless) and cartridges that use internal SD memory. That is my completely off the deep end guess, but that's where I'd go if I were doing something like this. I also believe that this is our chance to buy a system that will last forever and be made in the U.S.A., by Americans!! It is meant to attract retro enthused and will not support WiFi or even connect online! They don't want you to have to download anything, subscribe to anything, or have to upgrade anything! Just like the good old days, when you bought a cart, slapped it in and played all day!! I'm getting it no matter what! I have a good feeling about it and will likely get every cartridge for it that comes out. I hope they put games like Final Fight 3, Phantasy Star, Golden Axe, maybe a Pitfall remake that steps us up just a hair from the VCS, but not to such a great degree of change as was on the 16-bitters. A broad range of styles and the chance for 8 to 32 bit style games makes this system unique as a cartridge player! The only way to get something like that up until now would be emulation on a computer, WiFi or internet downloads with a modern system (sure you can use a 350W system to play Contra!), or something like a JXD handheld. Having a PS1 quality game on a cart would be great! Having a new library of fresh titles that fit the styles of old is alluring! CAN'T WAIT!! Keatah
I don't know if I'd get THAT excited about it. I'll wait to see the official specs and launch titles, and then see how it does before I go off and off and buying something willy nilly. Right now I have yet to see anything firm or any games that interest me. And there's loads of classics games that do interest me. Call me jaded by age, but I rarely get hyped up over anything tech anymore. Edited April 15, 2015 by Keatah

Imagine me saying that in the style of Benny from the Lego Movie when he gets manic about his SPACESHIP!! Yeah, we get it. The thing is, there are loads of systems already available with proper development tools and delivery methods that also use cartridges. Unless these guys are able to find out a way to make the carts cheap (my guess would be to have the "cart" consist of a passthrough board with a SD card mount on the inside, giving the illusion that it's actually a cartridge when it's actually not), nothing about this is going to be affordable for the end-user. Expect $70+ indie games.

Austin
What systems are you talking about? Hm, oh, I don't know... Super Nintendo, NES, Genesis/Megadrive, Turbo Grafx/PC Engine, Atari Jaguar, Neo-Geo, just to name a few. In the interview on youtube, he said indie games would be around $20. Everything on this thing is going to be an "indie" game, and unless they are delivering via download or releasing games on SD cards, I guarantee that no game is going to be as low as $20. The guy who's making it just said in an interview that indie games would be $20. There is no online connectivity (or moving parts, for that matter) so you won't have to download anything, or subscribe to anything, or buy half a game and then subscribe to download the other half, or use 350W disk based systems to play an old school game. He also said that there are some really big developers interested in making carts for this game. I was only speculating that SD cards may be used for larger games, but they may have something proprietary that I don't know about. He said that it wouldn't be an Android, so it may not be a variation of the ARM processor. I don't know the specs, but I know what the guy that's making it said in the hour and eleven minute interview in Buttons post, and it was that indie games would be $20 and licensed titles would be more. We have ALL of the systems and much of the software for them, so it's not like we don't know about twenty years dead systems. There hasn't been a cart based system that wasn't portable since the N64! Austin
Apparently, you haven't listened to the interview yet. Big developers are on board with it NOW. Yeah, right.. They may say "big developers" are on board now, but all we are going by is words coming out of someone's mouth. Until they have hard proof (games running on hardware from said-developers), it's all speculation. You've got to keep in mind these are small-time guys here fronting this thing. I'm hoping for the best, but my hopes--like many here--are not high. The systems you mentioned are "dead" as well as already made. THIS IS A NEW SETUP, for fans of old-school. If you don't like that sort of thing, hey--that's you. I'm all for it--I'm just trying to be realistic about the entire thing and not live in fantasy-land. If you want to do that, then by all means, there's another part of this forum that's a perfect fit for you! Isn't that how much Intellivision homebrews cost anyways This is true.. Loose NES homebrew carts seem to run somewhere between $25 and $50, based on what I'm seeing at RetroUSB. Of course, factor in boxes and things like that, and the prices increase further.

Until they have hard proof (games running on hardware from said-developers), it's all speculation. Not just 'someone's' mouth..the MAN who is in CHARGE of the whole thing! It's not speculation when the designer is telling you what is going to happen on the system. As, for the Jaguar. This is NOT the Jaguar. It's not claiming to be more than anyone else in a time when media is changing over to disk. This is a designer that sees half the booths at CES covering retro games and is offering something new with the capability to play a broad spectrum of old-school style games. He said that it would be able to play games anywhere from VCS 8-bit all the way up to PS1 32-bit on cartridges. Listen to the interview before you act like you know anything about the system. People here have erroneously claimed that it would be playing old system carts (WRONG), or that it would only be indie games (also, WRONG!), or that it would be expensive. It won't compare in cost to the next batch of cloud-only download based systems full of fans and huge wattage power supplies. There are companies that WANT their games on a cartridge. This is stated by the man who is in charge of this project in the interview!
Parrothead
Good stuff guys. We are looking forward to building a system for the ages and I am putting a team together that can deliver on a variety of levels. To add to the speculation I will say the RETRO VGS won't be PC/Linux based nor Android based. We are going the FPGA route. Keep up to date on our Facebook page http://www.RETROVGS.com and scroll through a few weeks to school up Edited April 15, 2015 by Parrothead
