Round thing on RCA cables?

RJ

Recommended Posts

On a couple RCA cables I got w/ my8-bit(s), there's a round, about 1-inch diameter black thing about 3-4 inches from one end. It says "Chelco" (obviously the maker) & says "this end to computer". It's attached to the cable w/ a Philips head screw. Is it some sort of surge protection or what?

Yep, they come in several varieties, but basically a ferrite rod, bead or donut is used to turn a small section of the wire into a very low value inductor. This reduces the ability of the wire to act as an RF broadcast antenna.
