badbrad
Is it possible to put an 800 keyboard on a 400? or is the 800 wider than the 400?
Nukey Shay
The case is entirely different (the 400 is about the same width as the 800's Ram cover).
+davidcalgary29
Of course, there's always those 800-style keyboard overlays. I see an 400 for sale with one of those mods every month or two on eBay.
Nukey Shay
There's a couple of those at least...one that was a sheet of rubber keys that you placed on top of the membrane (worthless), and one that had an actual keyboard that sat on top of the membrane (dunno). Was there ever a replacement keyboard made that didn't use the membrane?

Nukey Shay
It seems that there was once a mod outlined in Creative Computing for doing this (or so it seems). Probably involved wiring a "dumb" terminal keyboard to the computer some way... http://www.atarimagazines.com/creative/ind...obert+Noskowicz Sorry...I don't have that issue
Nukey Shay
Here's a document for wiring an Atari 1200XL keyboard to any Atari 8-bit: http://www.telusplanet.net/public/pairman/...n/1200xlkb.html And a full-stroke keyboard marketed by Inhome called the B Key 400, that served as a complete replacement for the membrane: http://www.atarimagazines.com/creative/v9n...e_of_genius.php
Callipygous
I have a B-Key 400 that's also upgraded to 48K. Really nice. Apparently at some point it was cheaper to do this than buy an 800. There were some external keyboards also.
Nukey Shay
Yeah, in the early 80's a 16k Atari800 would run something like $800. IIRC the 400 would be half that amount
Shannon
I had a souped up 400 at one point as well. I know the keyboard I put in replaced the previous membrane keyboard. Not sure if it was the b-key though. The keys tended to stick a little since they were so close (and a little on the mushy side) but it sufficed.
