Inky
Playing through some games, and I noticed that Defender runs a hell of a lot smoother than Stargate. Stargate, being a later title, I'd think would be the better of the two, but it's not. Why is this?
Mclaneinc
Number of objects on screen, prototype, the possibilities are endless.
+Stephen
Never knew about stargate for the 8-bit. I watched a few youtube videos, and yeah, it looks crappy. Is it an official release, or was it just an unfinished prototype? Here we go - http://www.atariprotos.com/8bit/software/stargate/stargate.htm
Lord Thag
IIRC, Stargate is a prototype that hadn't been optimized the way Defender had. Much like Sinistar. I'm hoping some hacker can speed it up a bit someday, the way people fixed Sinistar. It's a good port that really only suffers from the slowdown.
Inky
Ahh I thought it was officially released. That having been said, Millipede was officially released, and it seems to be choppier than Centipede
+Cafeman
http://cafeman.www9.50megs.com/atari/5200defender.html An interview with the programmer of both at the end of that article. He wasn't paid for Stargate, probably just quit working on it and thus not optimized.

Fragmare
Stargate was a victim of acute notgivingafuckism... a common ailment amongst programmers who are not paid or underpaid.
Bryan
Well, it also could have to do with trying to make sure it can be crammed into a 16K cartridge and will run on a 16K system. Sometimes you don't get to write the engine you'd like to.

Heaven/TQA
well... maybe lack of skills, lack of interest to make it smooth etc etc etc as it was said... endless reasons.

Mclaneinc
Its a cartridge based accelerator that uses a 68030 (I think) running at a high clock rate, its also emulated in Altirra if you want a sneak peek..
shanti77
Rapidus use 65c816 20mhz
Umberto
Its a cartridge based accelerator that uses a 68030 (I think) running at a high clock rate, its also emulated in Altirra if you want a sneak peek.. It uses the 65c816 and plugs into the CPU socket. Not a cartridge but very easy to install. I love mine. Adds a bunch of cool features
+Stephen
I believe McLenicwas thinking of the Veronika, which is a cart based accelerator, also using the 65816. There exists a BASIC for it. It's a neat solution and as it's cart based, no mods to the machine.
Mclaneinc
Yeah, mix up time on both, got my Snes and Amiga used processors mixed up (and to think I used to remove the PAL checks on the Snes cart dumps...My old head is going soft The only bit I got right was that its emulated on Altirra Edited February 28, 2018 by Mclaneinc
