bluswimmer
For the past couple of days I've been working on a 2600 version of the DSiWare game "Bird and Beans." If you haven't heard of it, essentially you play as a bird with a really long tongue, and you use said tongue to eat beans before they hit the ground. If they do hit the ground, it creates a hole that the bird can't cross. I tried to recreate the game on the 2600 as best as I could, and gameplay wise it works just like the original. More points are scored for eating higher beans, and there's two special beans (a white one that restores a block of the ground, and a blue one that gets rid of all the beans on screen and restores the entire ground). Here it is in action. Overall, this took me about four days of work. Hope you enjoy it! birdandbeans.bin birdandbeansV2.bin birdandbeansV2.1.bin birdandbeansV2.2.bin Edited February 27, 2019 by bluswimmer

BrianC
Neat! I know it by Pyoro, the name of the version in Wario Ware GBA. Edited June 2, 2018 by BrianC

+atari2600land
How did you get all those beans on the screen all at once?
Dionoid
I really like this game! Simple and addictive :-) Question: what tools did you use to build your game? --Dion Edited June 2, 2018 by Dionoid
bluswimmer
How did you get all those beans on the screen all at once? The beans are all drawn using the Player1 Sprite. There's about four scanlines in between each bean, and during those four scanlines I change Player1's color and position. I really like this game! Simple and addictive :-) Question: what tools did you use to build your game? --Dion Code wise the game is built 100% using 6502 Assembly. Thanks to everyone who's tried the game so far! I'm working on an updated version, so stay tuned!
+SpiceWare
Nice! Clever use of black to simplify the code.
bluswimmer
Hi everyone, Version 2 is out! Here's a few of the changes.... In addition to spawning more beans, reaching higher score values now speeds up the beans' descent Added five difficulty levels that can be selected with the Select button Added the secondary gamemode, which can be accessed by setting the left difficulty switch to Advanced. This mode has the bird spitting seeds at the beans. Shooting more beans at once yields more points. Added a blue background to the score Fixed a bug where platforms would sometimes repair in the wrong position Fixed a bug where eating the blue bean scored more points than it should have Here's the update in action. Enjoy!

bluswimmer
Just added a minor update. This one just adds a few graphical changes, and adjusts the pacing of the second gamemode.
bluswimmer
So I believe this game's gotten some renewed interest due to it's nomination for best Atari 2600 homebrew of 2018. As a part of the occasion, I've recorded a new commentary for the game. While I still think that it's a decent effort for one of my first games, be warned that I am rather critical of it.

Andromeda Stardust
Yes. I loved that little game. I need to see if I still have it on my New3DS. AFAIK, the DSiWare shop is shut down now...

I want to say that the eShop still has all of the DSiWare games, though it's been a while since I've checked...

Especially when you're talking about the Retron 77. Admittedly I kinda rushed the video out. Next time I'll try to lower the volume of the game so you can hear the commentary more clearly. As for the Retron 77, essentially they approached me asking to add the game to the system, asked me to change the graphics/name to avoid copyright, which resulted in Pepper Penguin, which is the same game aside from graphical changes.
+ZeroPage Homebrew
Sounds like some form of audio ducking is active in the settings, what that does is automatically lower the speech when the game is making sounds. Usually it's used in the opposite way so that the game is at a decent level until someone talks so that you never miss anything that is said. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ducking (In the video) When you talk and the game sounds, the game sound cuts off what you are saying. bluswimmer
Hi all, In light of the recent nomination, I have updated the game to utilize the correct amount of scanlines. Consider this the "not quite game of the year" edition
