pixelpedant
I've stared at my Wico Command Control joystick and Wico joystick adapter long enough, always idly wondering what the intended pronunciation of "Wico" is. How do you pronounce Wico, and does anyone know what the corporation's "offical" pronunciation of its name was?

jaybird3rd
If their commercials are any indication, the company intended it to be pronounced "wick-oh": 2

pixelpedant
Yeah, admittedly, I also always pronounced it "week-oh", based on absolutely nothing. And I'd run into instances of people pronouncing it all of wick-oh, wike-oh, and week-oh over the years. But I figured there had to be an official pronunciation (that didn't involve people just walking around HQ pronouncing their employer's name however they felt like pronouncing it at the moment). And it seems like the commercial there would be indicative! Thanks! Edited March 24, 2020 by pixelpedant
fimbulvetr
Huh. I always pronounced it wike-oh (rhymes with bike-oh) 2

+save2600
Myself and others I've known in the arcade industry, have always pronounced it "wike-oh". And despite the commercial above, not going to change now. Gonna be stubborn like that.

+fdr4prez
wow, so many replies of "wee-koh" I am curious why that is. I've always used "wick-oh"
dj_convoy
The commercial jingle sez "You'll go wacko for a wick-o" so I guess that's the answer. We always said "wee-co"

+InsaneMultitasker
that commercial is comical. I don't think those kids were achieving any high scores. My brothers pronounced it wick-o. I never cared for the brand of joystick as it always seemed to be too much 'play' in the joystick and I prefer the button somewhere besides the stick itself. 1
spacecadet
Always pronounced it "wick-o" I actually remember those ads from the time. Commercials are always a good way to find out the correct pronunciation of a brand name if there's a question (and YouTube has basically everything), although you can occasionally get into regional stuff that way too and then all bets are off.
