Joey Kay
Were they always silver with the white stripes? It seems to me that they changed over to that look a few years into it (software is that way for sure). Cheers! Joey

Bryan
What did the 400 and 800 boxes look like before the 1200XL? Ripped from Ebay: I said before the 1200XL. I've never seen a different 800 box, and I got an 800 in 1981. Maybe there was an earlier one, but it changed before the 1200XL. -Bry
LoTonah
I just looked at the product catalog I have from 1982, and it's the same as the image above, with the stripes. Hmm...good luck finding a picture older. I've googled and googled -LoTonah
Tempest
That's what my Atari 400 looked like. A silver box with the system on it. Curt Vendel might have an original 79 box, he should be able to tell if they changed it. Tempest
Goochman
Boy does that bring back memeories - Got my 800/810 and 1 game initially. The game was a disk game that needed basic - I couldnt get it to run so I went to DOS and decided to 'Format' it - DOH! First of many lessons I learned on the Tank. Tempest
Notice how the 800 box shows the original 410 tape player which was only on the market for a short time. Interesting. Tempest
+davidcalgary29
I believe that someone stated in an earlier post that some of the very first boxes in which 400 and 800 were shipped were made out of simple brown cardboard. I've seen one or two offered for sale on eBay, but don't know whether or not these were in fact "officially released" boxes.

Callipygous
First 800 box was a plain brown box. Not sure about the 400.
Bryan
First 800 box was a plain brown box. Not sure about the 400. I believe there was always a plain box inside of the printed box. Maybe the first ones didn't have printed outer boxes. I found this rare box, but I can't vouch for its authenticity.
Callipygous
Bryede, So someone stamped the 1200XL message on there? Weird. Anyway, I think both your box and the one I showed are bigger than the standard silver ones. Never actually measured them. Also think there is a smaller and larger silver variety. Retro Rogue
What did the 400 and 800 boxes look like before the 1200XL? As far as I know, there were no 400/800's made after the 1200 was introduced. They were cancelled at that time, so the "before" part doesn't make sense. Mind you, that doesn't mean they still weren't being sold in stores after the 1200XL was introduced. But there wouldn't be any box changes either if it was out of production.
