Happy_Dude
Did this game have custom controls ? It seems like you can use the paddle buttons to simulate a pinball machine but theres no way to release the ball Or am I missing something obvious ? StanJr
you use the joystick for Midnight Magic.
Happy_Dude
yes but look at the cart, it has someone holding 2 paddles. I think this would be the best control scheme if there was some way to release the ball.
Godzilla
thats easy, get a splitter or just use the stick to pull the plunger down to your desired plunge, then unplug stick, plug in the paddles, and hit the button to release.
+Nathan Strum
The instructions for playing Midnight Magic (one of my favorites) are here. The reason (I think) for the paddle controls on the artwork, is that Midnight Magic was originally a home computer game, so they probably just recycled the artwork from that version (which may have used paddles). By the time the 2600 version came out, paddle games were practically extinct, so they went with joysticks, since that's what most gamers were still using. It works pretty well, actually. Although rigging up a pushbutton controller would be better. (I play it in Stella mostly now, and my keyboard works nicely.)
jsoper
I was thinking once of adding a din-9 cable and some pushbutton switches into my Video Pinball stand alone so it could be used as a pinball controller for various console games. The problem is that different systems use different signals, especially for both flippers up at once (heck even the 2600 Video Pinball and Midnight Magic do it differently). Think I heard of someone even doing this, not sure.
Vic George 2K3
Wonder if anyone ever thought of creating (if it's possible to do) a pinball videogame controller with two side buttons for the flippers and an actual plunger for launching the ball? Rob Mitchell
Yup! I gutted a broken Atari Video Pinball (1977 dedicated pong console) and easily rewired it as a controller for 2600 Video Pinball, Midnight Magic (2600/8-bit) and 2600 Bumber Bash. With switches I can make it work with Vectrex Spinball. These games feel good with two flipper control! The plunger function still requires a separate joystick which I wire into the same controller port with a splitter. The only thing missing from this controller setup is the tiltfunction. And the pot on the AVP is replaced with an Indy 500 spinner! Rob Mitchell, Atlanta, GA
jsoper
Oh, YOU'RE the one who did that Rob, glad I wasn't imagining it. Have you ever thought of expanding it to other systems? The Nes and Jag have some decent pinball games?
