+wavemotion
Ok.. I finally found another Atari in the "wild". This time I got some suggestions from an Atari collector to spread the word amonst my co-workers and friends that I'm looking for old Atari 2600 stuff... and I got a hit this week! A heavy Sixer (damm, these things are built like TANKS) with joystick and 2 games (commons). No cost! But it had a problem with the video out. Spending a few hours with the schematic, it came down to the TIA chip (40 pin with the designation CO10444 though I've also seen it CO1044D I think). This is the 2nd unit that had the TIA chip bad (I have another unit where the TIA chip has bad paddle inputs). Do others see a high failure rate in these TIA chips? I'm amazed that 2/3 of my admittedly small sample have gone bad. I've also got a unit with a bad RIOT (6532) chip (difficulty switches don't work). I'm sure it's just my bad luck, but do others find these are highly failure prone chips? It seems like the units are built heavy duty in every other respect! In the hopes that maybe someone here has a broken 2600 but with a potentially good TIA chip - does anyone have a spare they might let go? The 40 pin chip is socketed on the 2600 and 2600A and should be an easy removal. TIA (that's Thanks In Advance, not TIA
