Interested in a new Acrylic case for 800XE/130XE series ?

Short "Work in Progress" Update 03/04/22:

The manufacturer (Plexilaser) has currently started modeling the XE case design.

The challenge at the moment is the module port, which on the XE is mapped by the rear panel of the enclosure.

(For comparison: on the XL the module port is directly on the mainboard and therefore does not need to be modeled by the case).

I will now send him a selection of different module variants in the short term so that he can verify this.

After that it will be decided whether he will realize the module/ECI port over an extra printed 3D part, or further over a conventional acrylic solution.

Thats all for now, guys...

I will keep you uptodate.

Gtx.,

I have an interest for 2 cases for 65xe and 130xe, but with ECI port. Unfortunately last news shows that "economy version first", but I hope that "ECI version" is the next step.

Don't worry,

the first version that will be available is the one with the ECI port ?!

I may be missing something here but...Why install a XL in this case as opposed to keep it in it's original case?

Why?

The question is very simple to answer: Because you can.... ?

No seriously, what you missed, this is not about an ATARI XL, we talk about the ATARI XE series....

And this is about modding and there are unfortunately very, very many extremely yellowed XE cases on the market.

For many owners it is an upgrade that his yellowed XE computer after the conversion simply looks nicer and more elegant and you can see the internal technology too.

I own a lot of XL and XE (also various single motherboards) some of them have cases in terrible condition, why not give them a new home?

Some love it, some just don't... ?

Nobody has to do this...

So folks,

I am happy to present you the first WIP update (see pictures attached) ?

Here are the first prototype drafts from Micha (Plexilaser) regarding XE case design.

However, he still plans to lower the keyboard a bit....

Also the slanted ventilation slots on the deck side (like on the original are planned....)

But here again the question to all interested:

Quote

Are there any special requests that you might want to consider right now?

Regarding special requests:

Quote

Ventilation slots should work. I will also lower the lid 5mm. The space is enough for it and that makes visually much more...
Additional extensions could be done via the sockets on the rear panel. For this I would have to get sketches with the hole pattern, then I can
provide for that. Will then probably an alternative rear wall, where the additional holes to break out are already provided.

My few steps forward (the same case as a base):

Cool, but unfortunately few steps behind ?,

´cause we talk about a new "XE Design" case, NOT the old 800XL acrylic design case...

But your vid is still cool ?

Btw:
The manufacturer is the same ?

Minor Update:

The XE case is coming along ;)

Here is the first prototype version with XE style vents.

The biggest challenge at the moment is the modeling for the unlocking mechanism of the "old" 400/800/XL modules.
I had sent Micha the 3 module versions (see attached) as templates (XL version, XE version and ThirdParty version).
Does anyone of you know other original variants (no 3D printing or self-made), which differ from the plug-in mechanism of these three still strongly?

Cheers,

andY

I'd like to get one for 800XL and one a 130XE?

Do they ship to the U.S. or are you handling the orders?

Hi Fell,

the 800XL case is already available, here: -> Acrylic case for 800XL  ?

The seller (Plexilaser) takes care of all orders and he also ships to the USA. For details feel free to send him a request on his website.

The XE case is still in progress and not ready yet. As soon as the XE case is finally available I will bring an update here.
Then it can also be ordered via the Plexilaser website.

So guys! It is done?!

I got my first "production-ready", "trial" XE-case and used the time to assemble it today.

A manual was not yet included (this will be created soon).

But the assembly went relatively quickly, I'm super satisfied, it all fits and of course looks very cool?!

Also for the critical unlocking mechanism of the "old XL/400/800"- modules Micha has come up with an ingenious trick:
He created a 3D-attachment, which you simply "clamp" onto the mainboard-module-port (it fits perfectly, nothing wobbles and it works fine).
Tests with old modules also work perfectly (see also pictures)

I already got a matching brushed aluminum label (ATARI 130XE), that looks quite cool in black/silver I think?.
(But it´s not fixed at the moment, I have to think about the position where it looks most aesthetic.)

I will discuss my rebuilding experiences with Micha after easter days and I think, it´s ready for production!

So all of you, who have pre-ordered here or announced their interest, can assume, that it will start soon!.

But enough said, here are a few pictures which give a first first impression (see attached).....

Cheers,

andY

I would have expected a picture that shows the 3D-attachment.

Hi Mathy,

here some closer pictures of the 3D-Part, it is not visually spectacular, but fits perfectly and works well ?

So guys, the time has come?!

The brand new XE acrylic case for all ATARI 800XE/130XE/65XE (in the ECI version) is available in the STORE and can be ordered now!

The photo in the store currently still shows the prototype (with the shorter vents), but the final delivery version already has the longer vents (pictures to follow...)

The new XE case costs 65 Euro plus shipping, I think that's a very fair price.

For all customers outside of Germany (or don´t speak German):

If you want to purchase or got questions, but got problems with the german shop,

please send an eMail to info@plexilaser.de (in english if possible).
You can place your order also by eMail. Please feel free to contact Plexilaser.

Cheers and a nice weekend @all  ?!

andY

I just assembled this one. Veeery fragile - although perfectly packed for transport (I was deeply impressed), mine arrived with a tiny crack. But I can accept it. Looks really nice. Now it has a stock motherboard (one of the very few I have since I like modded ones). I wonder what to do with it :-)

Now you could try, to upgrade it with some colours inside, like I did ?

Yeaah, sure, it´s not a big deal ;),

but the transparent case is perfect for various (light-)gimmicks, I experimented a bit with a 5050'er RGB set including controller and remote ;).

For this I got myself a cheap Mood-Light set (about 11€), which is perfect for the installation, because the set:

1. is powered by USB (5+VDC), so the voltage can be taken perfectly directly from the ATARI
2. has a radio remote control instead of an IR remote control, so the controller can be hidden in the case

The FB is used to control the LED controller regarding color, brightness, modes or just to turn it off, if it should get on your nerves ?!

Here are some pictures of the first test setup.

For later I thought about replacing the 0-8-15 standard controller with an Arduino Mini or RPi0 or similar, in order to indicate with the RGB-LED's additionally also certain activities and/or conditions of the ATARI optically,
like e.g:

- Basic on/off
- current OS version at OS-Switcher (red /green/blue/white)
- SIO activities
- system- or CPU-temperature
- Stereo on/off

Just to name a few examples...

Cheers,

andY
