MeandMyC64
it seems like it would make sense to get rid of my 2600 and get a 7800 so i could play games for both...are there any resons i am not thinking of that would make this a bad idea? ie the controllers for the 7800 were like the ones for the 5200
JB
The 7800 can use 2600 controllers too. There's incompatabilities with a few VCS games.
MeandMyC64
how many games?
JB
how many games? Depends on the 7800. Some are more compatible than others.
Miqorz
Just keep your 2600 and buy a 7800.. no need to get rid of it..
Clock
If you are a casual gamer then sure you can, the 7800 is 98% compatible with the 2600 (only a handfull of games don't work or don't fit). If you are a collector you should have both so you can test everything - assuming your trying to get everything
DracIsBack
The "incompatabilities" tend to be grossly overstated. There's only a couple that don't works (of the hundreds that were made) and then depends on the 7800. My last 7800 only had trouble with ROBOT TANK. MeandMyC64
yeah i guess i could just hold on to my 2600 and put it away w/ my extra systems-but keep the 7800 hooked up to my tv...i just dont want to add another system to my set up- 4 systems plus dvd and vcr is a big enough mess
Inky
If you can get the real early 7800 that had the expansion interface on the side, you'll have no problems running all 2600 games on those (I know )
Voch
Apparantly which model 7800 you have impacts what games are playable (check out this section of the Atari 7800 FAQ). But, then again, the impact seems to be contained to the handful of games that are mentioned in the FAQ. I personally am keeping my six-switcher Atari 2600 because I know a few of the Activision games I have don't work on my 7800. But my main machine is my 7800 unless it's the rare occasion that I feel like getting frustrated by Space Shuttle (which rolls on my 7800). But' date=' then again, the impact seems to be contained to the handful of games that are mentioned in the FAQ.[/quote'] Bah! I don’t think that this list is any more accurate than just randomly buying a 7800 and trying it out. My 7800 has no expansion port but neither dose it have issue with any cart that I've thrown at it (aside from a Hozer "A Better Pac-Man" cart, but I think that's related to a bad fit rather than a compatibility issue). Plus, based upon messages that I've read on both this board and RGVC over the past few years, I personally think that there are more 7800s without the problem than ones with it. Brad2600
My 7800 won't play Robot Tank but it works well with any other game I've tried. Keep the 2600..get a 7800...then you can brag.
ApolloBoy
I use my 7800 now for playing my 2600 games, but I still keep my 2600 Jr hooked up next to it.

Redcurrie
I agree with those who say keep both, just in case. (This is coming from a person diagnosed with Packratus Majoris so consider yourself warned.....) The only carts I have had a problem with were Activision Decathalon and Dolphin.
