Adam Huemer
Someone tell me the exact differences between the Atari 400 and the Atari 800?! Is the 800 OS A somewhere available on the net? thanks 4 answers in advance. My video games encyclopaedia now features Atari 8 bit home computers too: ... erhrm... 2 games yet. http://pirates.emucamp.com
Nukey Shay
As far as the circuitry and chips are concerned, there's not much difference between them. The 800 just has the advantages of a full-stroke keyboard, detachable OS-rom and ram cartridges, an extra cartridge port, and a DIN cable port for ch/lum monitor connection. Both early versions of the 400 and 800 were made with a CTIA graphics chip (which may have some compatability problems with newer software), but all computers made after '81 used GTIA. The limited 16k of ram in 400's may be a problem if you wish to use disk software, but games that do work will play exactly as they do on an 800. As far as the OS is concerned, You can grab them from mindfield's ftp since Holmes appears to be down... ftp://atari8:archive@ftp.mindfield.dyndns....org:2026/ROMs/ Atari800win should let you select this under "machine type". Adam Huemer
No, about the version A system rom, which was found in Atari 800s. Sites who offer system roms just have version B.
