Brad2600
Why is the fricking cartridge heavy? Is it a ROM thing? I got a copy from Christopher Sly in a trade and I was wondering why it was so heavy. I don't think that any of my other Coleco carts are heavy. I did try searching for Mr.Do in the forum with no luck. Any ideas?
Derek
It takes a lot of memory to flicker that much. The blockiness and pitiful colors also suck up a lot of memory. Horribly slow joystick response also take up space. Seriously thought, it is heavy as there are extra memory chips involved in making the enemies quite intelligent. I find it far too hard to play as you are so slow and they are constantly blocking any chance you have to try and get the board cleared. That is what is taking all the memory, their irritating intelligence. This is the same reason that Dig Dug has extra memory on board. The graphics still are horrid, flicker, poor colors, but they seem to think.
CPUWIZ
Actually, that's not the reason, I explained it to him via PM already but didn't see this thread. It's a 8K cart made with 4 logic chips and an EPROM, that's the reason why it's heavy. Sorry Kepone, I didn't see this thread.
Christophero Sly
Zaxxon feels as heavy, if not heavier than, Mr. Do! Does Zaxxon use a similar chip set-up with an EPROM? Also, is Mr. Do! more susceptible to bit-rot because it contains an EPROM? Thanks
CPUWIZ
Some Zaxxon's are also made with EPROM boards, yes but only maybe 1 out of 10. How do I know? I've opened 10 Zaxxon carts.
Brad2600
It's all good man. My copy of Zaxxon is not as heavy so it definitely doesn't have an EPROM. By the way, it's quite a flickery game. Colecovision version looks and plays better.
