pixelmischief
Given the obvious utility of having FATFS.SYS on CAR:, I must assume there is a good reason for why it is not there. Is it possible, however, to have a utility on CAR: that would write FATFS.SYS out to a drive?
Peri Noid
Can't you just copy it from CAR: to anywhere you want?

Peri Noid
It is not but that's where you'd like it to be. Let's assume, it is there. then - you are wrong, you CAN copy from CAR: to a disk - you just need to do it properly, as it's described in the SDX docs: TYPE CAR:FATFS.SYS >>C:FATFS.SYS (or something like this) Here we have a topic on this: Edited December 19, 2022 by Peri Noid
pixelmischief
I didn't know that about using TYPE! Good info! I wonder if that means that if I could get FATFS.SYS into the SDX CAR: image, I would have a single-device solution.
Peri Noid
And why cannot you ryn FATFS.SYS from CAR: and you need to copy it to any drive instead? Other device drivers are loaded this way. Why not this one? Edited December 19, 2022 by Peri Noid
pixelmischief
That's a question for FJC to answer. All I know is that it is not there and that there is quite a bit of past forum discussion supporting my understanding that it is not there because it cannot be run from there. Possible I misunderstood it, but I don't think that's the case. Given the incredible convenience that having it there and available for a simple TYPE command to copy it onto a disk, I would be shocked to find out FJC hadn't thought of it sooner. I've read him field several questions about how to get the desired effect and never once solution his way in that direction. flashjazzcat
You can put FATFS.SYS on CAR and run it directly from that location, AFAIK. I can see no reason why not.

There are many drivers not included there for reasons of space conservation on CAR: and/or the fact they're specialised. You might as well ask why the entire content of the SDX toolkit disk isn't on CAR: when most of the tools generally end up on the SDFS boot partition of the user's hard disk. Not that I'm sure why this is a question for me to answer, however, since I don't maintain SDX and did not write FATFS.SYS.
pixelmischief
I guess this ROM customizer is the answer: https://sdx.atari8.info/index.php?show=en_addons

It was the download compositor that doesn't seem to have a SIDE3 option -> https://sdx.atari8.info/index.php?show=en_download_release I've downloaded the Windows tool and will give it a go. Thanks for the patient advice.
