After spending my free time in the evenings smoking a pipe and reading instead of playing video games the past couple months I found myself missing playing games, so this week I finally got back to my old favorite hobby! I dinked around with a few random games for various systems before settling on Alien Trilogy for the original PlayStation, and did a complete playthrough of it on my Retroid Pocket 3+! It was a lot of fun to play again for the first time in several years, and probably my second favorite Alien game; second only to Alien: Isolation.

In any case, it was really nice to play some games again this week and I think I'll be back for more next week! :)

Game Boy
Kirby's Block Ball - 10 minutes

Game Boy Color
Star Wars: Yoda Stories - 11 minutes

Nintendo 64
Mario Kart 64 - 69 minutes
Yoshi's Story - 18 minutes

PlayStation
Alien Trilogy - 612 minutes

Sega Genesis
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - 64 minutes

Yeah, I myself have been reading more lately and thus time spent on gaming (particularly classic / retro) has gone down.  Still, I am sure it will pick back up and perhaps reduce time with modern gaming to boot soon enough.

My time for the week:

PlayStation:

Sampras Extreme Tennis - 227 min.

It gave me great satisfaction to reach what I thought was the end of the main mode of this (quite good) tennis game...only to discover that beating Sampras had merely unlocked a "Super Tournament mode" that I now need to beat.

Sigh. At the risk of hyperbole: must every game overstay its welcome?

I really need to keep up with this...  lol

One "classic" game this week.

GameBoy

Castlevania 2:  Belmont's Revenge - 350 min (There's a streamer that has a "Monthly Retro Challenge"... I've done it previous months, but forgot to post times.  Previous months included Aladdin for the Game Gear and Hyperstone Heist for Genesis.  This month it was CV 2 Belmont's Revenge.  It's been a while since a game got me this worked up.  There were a couple times that I had to pause the stream, put up the "Be Right Back" screen, and walk it off... By the end of the stream, I was just done.  Didn't care anymore.  Didn't want to play anymore.  Just gave up on it.  Wasn't a rage quit, because I played through the rage.  It was an apathy quit.  It just got to where it wasn't worth it, so I quit.  If you've played it before, I was on the last section before Drac.  Never got to the end boss of that level or Dracula.  But oh well.  I didn't break anything, so it was a win in a way.)

Yeah, it is a good game.  But, the pixel perfect jumping you need at times and the (what I thought) somewhat cheap ways to die turned me off to the game.  Granted, I could have stuck with it and tried to get better and/or further.  But, I got other games I want to look and play, so I was good with the limited time I spent with it.  Still, it is definitely worth playing and experiencing imo.

Here's the summary for Week 29, running from July 17 - 23. We logged 3047 minutes of eligible play, playing 65 games on a total of 14 systems.

Top 10:

1. Alien Trilogy (PlayStation) - 612 min.
2. MegaMania (Atari 8-bit) - 480 min.
3. Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge (Game Boy) - 350 min.
4. Sampras Extreme Tennis (PlayStation) - 227 min. (#2)
5. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 145 min. (#1)
6. Anguna: Scourge of the Goblin King (NES/Famicom) - 129 min.
7. Blocks (Atari 2600) - 122 min.
8. Gunbird 2 (Dreamcast) - 100 min.
9. Hellfire (1 player version) (Arcade) - 75 min.
10. Thunderground (Atari 2600) - 71 min.

Pre-NES top 10:

1. MegaMania (Atari 8-bit) - 480 min.
2. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 145 min. (PN#1)
3. Blocks (Atari 2600) - 122 min.
4. Thunderground (Atari 2600) - 71 min. (PN#5)
5. Miner 2049er (Atari 2600) - 39 min. (PN#6)
6. H.E.R.O. (Atari 2600) - 30 min. (PN#9)
7. Micro Hexagon (Commodore 64) - 23 min.
8. Multitron (VIC-20) - 22 min.

Top 10 systems:

1. PlayStation (3 games) - 849 min. (#4)
2. Atari 2600 (20 games) - 485 min. (#1)

8. N64 (2 games) - 87 min.
9. Genesis (1 game) - 64 min. (#6)
10. VIC-20 (4 games) - 49 min.

Alien Trilogy makes a return to the tracker after not having been since 2019, i.e. before Covid-19. A bit more frequent is the top pre-NES game MegaMania on Atari 8-bit. With additional help from in particular Sampras Extreme Tennis, the PlayStation also becomes the most played system, with the Atari 2600 just ahead of Atari 8-bit and likewise the VIC-20 one minute ahead of the Commodore 64 just outside of the list.

No changes to the 1000, 5000, 10000 Minute Clubs.

Kinda slow week, with qualification taking up most of my free day.

SNES-

Lagoon- 45min, completed 1st task/cave of game. Not bad, but horrible attack radius, and the semi iso view blocks view of enemies, items, and yourself, if along the lower side of a passage. Using a third button to talk to npc's kinda odd too. A dead guy moves faster than that kid you rescue from the cave. Luckily, only the skeleton warriors seem to actually target anything.

BlaZeon- 30min none of us get past the cheeseball spitting, connect-4 board boss on 1st level yet. Game does kinda suck, but good for getting the nephews' feet into shmups.

Final Fight 3- 15min

NES-

Esper Corps- 10min, strange game with insane jumping ability. side view vertical dungeon, and really silly giant clown mallet for an attack

Legend of Zelda- 20min, and won't be continuing on, lol. Ain't my bag, man

Fantasy Zone- 10min I can still beat the pea shooting giant brownie, lol.

Atari 8-bit:
James Bond 007 - 25 min. (cartridge version)

Mostly play testing in the emulator. Oddly enough, there exists a prototype version of this game that is available in multiple versions on every site, but the final cartridge version is somewhat hard to come by, and even harder to find as an executable that can be loaded as a file. Since I didn't find a such version made in the past 40 years (!!), a forum member finally helped creating one.

My times for the week:

PlayStation:
Aces of the Air - 153 min.
ATV Mania - 19 min.
ATV: Quad Power Racing - 5 min.
Brahma Force - 23 min.
Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon - 59 min.
Gungage - 82 min.
M&M's: Shell Shocked - 66 min.
Sampras Extreme Tennis - 262 min.

Beat Aces of the Air -- thoughts here -- and won six matches (out of a probable eight) in the Super Tournament in Sampras Extreme Tennis.

Atari 2600

H.E.R.O. - 5 minutes

Kaboom! - 116 minutes

Miner 2049er - 69 minutes

Solar Fox - 176 minutes

Thunderground - 34 minutes

I thought I had the winning pattern for Miner 2049er but ended up tied for 4th place.

Just 'phoned' in H.E.R.O. to get some last place points.  Seems like a good game but I just didn't make time for it.

8. Genesis (1 game) - 60 min. (#9)
9. ColecoVision (11 games) - 52 min.
10. Game Gear (2 games) - 35 min.

As neither of the top three from last week appear on the top list this week, Sampras Extreme Tennis and Solar Fox move up on the lists, winning one category each. The pre-NES list is completely dominated by Atari, and if it wasn't for good old 007, it would have been 2600 all the way. On the systems list though, it nearly is 2600 all the way, with a few lesser seen systems including the ColecoVision.

No changes to the 1000, 5000, 10000 Minute Clubs.
