for added difficulty, try playing this long with a feather covered bird on your foot, that digs the claws in, each time you move

I've heard about a lot of weird video game controllers over the years, but this one is close to the top of the list.

Here's the summary for Week 33, running from August 14 - 20. We logged 3456 minutes of eligible play, playing 50 games on a total of 15 systems.

Top 10:

1. Ishido: Way of the Stones (Atari Lynx) - 400 min.
2. King's Bounty (Commodore 64) - 330 min.
3. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 242 min. (#8)
4. Pokémon Gold (Game Boy Color) - 228 min. (#3)
5. Elevators Amiss (Atari 2600) - 221 min. (#5)
6. Resident Evil: Survivor (PlayStation) - 215 min.
7. Amoeba Jump (Atari 2600) - 213 min. (#9)
8. Blocks (Atari 2600) - 207 min. (#6)
9. Illusion of Gaia (SNES) - 180 min.
10. Q*Bert (PC DOS) - 155 min.

Pre-NES top 10:

1. King's Bounty (Commodore 64) - 330 min.
2. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 242 min. (PN#3)
3. Elevators Amiss (Atari 2600) - 221 min. (PN#1)
4. Amoeba Jump (Atari 2600) - 213 min. (PN#4)
5. Blocks (Atari 2600) - 207 min. (PN#2)
6. Q*Bert (PC DOS) - 155 min.
7. Lucky Chase (Atari 2600) - 49 min. (PN#5)
8. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 46 min. (PN#6)
9. Scramble (Atari 7800) - 45 min. (PN#10)
10. Dragon's Havoc (Atari 7800) - 30 min.
10. Kung Fu Master (Atari 7800) - 30 min.

Top 10 systems:

1. Atari 2600 (13 games) - 1086 min. (#1)
2. NES/Famicom (7 games) - 403 min. (#3)
3. Atari Lynx (1 game) - 400 min. (#5)
4. Commodore 64 (1 game) - 330 min.
5. PlayStation (4 games) - 301 min. (#2)
6. Game Boy Color (1 game) - 228 min. (#4)
7. SNES (2 games) - 190 min.
8. PC DOS (1 game) - 155 min.
9. Atari 7800 (8 games) - 150 min. (#6)
10. N64 (3 games) - 55 min.

It is unclear if even the Oracle could predict it, but Ishido becomes the most played game this week, a little over an hour ahead of King's Bounty, which in turn is the most played pre-NES game. While the Atari 2600 didn't have any entry in first place on the individual lists, as a system it becomes the most played this week, which has zero contribution of arcade games for a change.

Resident Evil: Survivor (PlayStation) becomes member #539 in the 1000 Minute Club with a total of 1034 minutes, and the first game to enter the club for 6 weeks.

Here are my times for this week (August 21st through 27th, 2023) on classic systems:

MS-DOS:

J-Bird - 49 min. in 3 sessions

PC*Bert - 20 min.

Q*Bert - 24 min. in 2 sessions

All games I've played this week on classic systems are clones of Q*Bert. First I played the official version by Parker Brothers, but this was screwed up somehow, as I probably already wrote last week. In Level 3, however, you get a deal breaker... because some cubetops are displayed in wrong colors! Cubetops that actually get reverted back to being red stay yellow, which would be the destination color. Thus you get into a situation where all cubetops appear in their destination color, but you don't advance to the next round because some cubetops that appear to be yellow actually have been reverted to red.

Then we have PC*Bert from 1997 which is pretty close to the arcade original Q*Bert, but it's clearly made for faster systems since even if you run DOSBox on 3000 cycles, there will be slowdowns especially when the creatures are "talking". On the other hand, it will probably not run natively on Windows 10 or 11 64-biut, being a 16-bit software itself. However, I still have to check this.

In comparison to that, J-Bird is so much better... non-moving objects do not flicker, they always move consistently, and there are also no slowdowns, helped by the fact that you don't have to throttle down Dosbox on this one... it always runs at the correct speed, no matter how fast your PC is. Overall, this unofficial clone is much more enjoyable than the official one by Parker Brothers.

Cyber Knight II- 20min pass...

Treasure Hunter G- 1hr liking this one

Record of Lodoss War- 95min Played 1st section numerous times, and saving, but that feature on this particular cart, is dead. Replaced battery twice, and it holds data till game over screen., then gone, without reset or powering off. was kinda digging this one too, despite the goofy dungeon view setup.

Yesterday's (08/27/2023) totals:

Game Gear

1) Buster Fighter - 10 minutes

2) Power Drive - 20 minutes

3) Phantom 2040 - 5 minutes

4) Wizard Pinball - 20 minutes

#1 is just Buster Fight, I think.

What did you think of these? They are all very unique entries in the GG catalog.

A slightly unusual week for me. It’s the last week of the month which means I have high score challenges left and right to try my hand at. But for now I played a bunch of stuff I had been neglecting.

Arcade:

Battle Lane Vol 5 - 45 minutes

IMG_2946.thumb.jpeg.f8923d42d02a75c045c1821ec07258af.jpeg

There were no volumes 1-4.

Commodore 64:

Sword of Fargoal - 128 minutes

IMG_2865.thumb.jpeg.45ddda587458635dc991aefd54d8689f.jpeg

Never got the Sword but I made it to level 10.

Uridium - 15 minutes.

I miss the high res graphics of the ST but this is still an amazing game.

Game Boy:

Battle City - 5 minutes

Dig Dug - 15 minutes

IMG_2897.thumb.jpeg.295b71bcd4ec71543b4b8bc1646ac3a0.jpeg

Dr Mario - 5 minutes

Q Billion - 45 minutes

I had never figured this out before but now that I have it’s pretty addictive.

Shiren the Wanderer - 20 minutes

Playing a difficult roguelike in a language you don’t read is maybe not going to be successful, but it sure is interesting. Amazing music in this one.

Game Boy Color:

Daikatana - 45 minutes

IMG_2907.thumb.jpeg.2f1e915e3b7589afeecfcc112b70423c.jpeg

A good game but way too hard, at least for how good at it I am right now.

Pokemon Pinball - 5 minutes

Wings of Fury - 35 minutes

Yeah, you are correct.  It should be Buster Fight.

Regarding my opinions, I would say the following:

1) Buster Fight - Not a bad little fighting game, though the amount of characters to choose from is limited and I couldn't get past the second level / dude, so my enjoyment on this was a bit limited due to that aspect and fighting games not really being my thing.  Still, definitely a title worth checking out.

2) Power Drive - Not great.  Stick with the Mega Drive / Genesis version as its playability and graphics are way better.

3) Phantom 2040 - A good looking game, but just not my thing.  I am not the biggest fan of platformers.  However, it is a title worth looking at.

4) Wizard Pinball - An interesting little 8-bit pinball game.  However, like most 8-bit pinball games, the ball physics just aren't up to snuff and the table is a bit lacking.  Still, there is some fun to be had and I would definitely recommend anyone who is a fan of video pinball to give this a go at least once.

Thank you for sharing!

1. Buster Fight has a very different way to do special moves than most fighting games. It reminds me kind of Switchblade - you hold an action button and then select a direction or set of directions to do moves. If you don’t get on well with most fighting games it might be worth sticking with!

2. yeah, for the most expensive game on the system Power Drive doesn’t really blow you away. Still, it’s the only isometric racer on the system so it’s worth something for that. The Jaguar sequel is unmatched, though.

3. Phantom 2040 is a very deep game, with a lot of adventure elements, and among combat-oriented platformers it’s one of the most accessible. While the Genesis version is the gold standard this is a shockingly good port.

4. The ball physics in Wizard Pinball are certainly lacking but this is the only Devil’s Crush clone on the Game Gear and one of the only ones period. I have adjusted to the physics and consider it one of my favorite exclusives on the system. I am not saying one of the best, but one of my favorites :)
