This week I just played a whole bunch of games on my Powkiddy V90, which is funny since I have several vastly more powerful and capable emulation handhelds with better screens and better controls, but I just kind of have a soft spot for this dinky little thing. :)

While the total participation increases by 80% from last week, a lot of the lists are status quo at the top: Monopoly, Terranigma, Solar Fox, Kaboom! A bit more variation on the systems list, with the PC Engine challenging the Atari 2600. No changes to the 1000, 5000, 10000 Minute Clubs.

Arcade:
Exerion - 5 min.

Atari 8-bit:
Aquatron - 16 min.
Q-Bert - 8 min.

PC DOS:
Stunts / 4D Sports - 48 min.

SG-1000:
Exerion - 5 min.

The A8 games of course are part of the HSC, though I didn't spend as much time on those as I may have intended. I played two versions of Exerion to compare how much is different in terms of attack waves, sounds, controls etc between the arcade and one of the home versions. Apparently the Famicom version is in between the two, and most likely the MSX version is a conversion of the SG-1000 one. While looking for more systems to play, I didn't find suitable power or antenna cables for my Channel F so that will have to wait for another week. Instead I powered up my FleaFPGA with Next186 core and leisurely played with Stunts again.

Here are my times for this week (December 4th through 10th, 2023) on classic systems...

Arcade:

Arabian - 8 min.

Arabian (Atari) - 201 min. in 6 sessions

Commodore 64:

Tales of the Arabian nights - 6 min.

NES:

Super Arabian - 18 min.

All my gaming this week revolved around the arcade game "Arabian" and its decendants. I tried the Atari version of Arabian instead of the original Japanese version, and the Atari version has got remarkable differences. This version is generally harder although the birds don't respawn until the 4th round. But to make up for this, the genie in the bottle appears from the first round. Also, the player isn't allow to fall more than about one floor. However, you already get an extra life at 20,00 points while the Sun original doesn't give one until the 30,000 point mark. The music has also changed, now playing the "Scheherezade" by Rimsky-Korsakovv instead of the William Tell Overture and the Can-Can.

Then there is "Tales of the Arabian nights" by Interceptor Software which was inspired by "Arabian". The first screen is pretty similar in that you have to collect sacks with letters on them on a boat. But the level design is a bit different, and so are the enemies, and the player can't fight nor climb. You have to think how to actually solve the first level because there's only one possibility... falling down on the last sack to collect after having collected all others. In this case you will win the round. If you fall down there while not having collected all sacks before the last one, you die from your fall being too high! I don't like such quirks in games...

Finally, Super Arabian is the NES version of Arabian, and it has changed again! It's much faster than the arcade version, and some of the rules and enemy behavior is different as well, as is (again) the background music. The gameplay is very smooth, but you have to be quick. The collision detection also doesn't seem to be as forgiving as in the arcade version.

Does this mean out of the previous 18 + 96 minutes you played this year, you played the Sun Electronics version? It was previously tracked in 2019 by @wongojack and perhaps he played the Atari version of the same game?
