spookt
Pulled what I thought was a known good 1050 off the shelf as someone on Facebook was looking for a tested unit. This 1050 was tested good in June 2021, and probably hasn't been tested since. It has been stored in dry and temperate conditions. On power up there is no drive motor activity. All major ICs test good on a working board. Checking schematic and doing some tracing I found some nasty corrosion damage and at least one broken trace due to leaky 47uF caps in the motor control circuit and elsewhere. All the same type and value. This is the first time I've had damage in an Atari peripheral due to bad caps, perhaps I've been lucky? Time for some cleanup and trace repair! Peri Noid
You were. It looks like these were replaced. Very badly replaced. And they need some care.
Paul Westphal
Nice work. I never fancied myself a disk drive repair guy, but basic knowledge can get these things up and running.
spookt
A couple of hours under the scope and she lives again. Caps replaced, corrosion removed and broken traces restored. I might just pull the rest of my 1050s and check for leaky caps or corrosion …

Leaky capacitors are quite unusual for the 1050 drives. They normally just dry out and short. Incidentally were you ever a member of TWAUG? Iguana Bob
He mentioned that they had been previously replaced, likely bad caps from the early 2000s. They were in everything. Had it not been recapped, it probably would have been fine.
SlagOMatic
Nice job. 🙂 I recently recapped five 1050s, plus replaced their drive belts, replaced the regulators, gave the boards a sonic cleaning, cleaned/lubricated the mechanisms, and installed Happy upgrades. One of them has a timing issue (not related to the caps) but the other four are running fine.
