Joey Kay
Question... The old Atari 7800 tv ads said "Care-a-teek-a" (soft a's), but I always thought it was "Car-aw-ti-ka" (rhymes with "erotica")... Which one is it? Is there an accepted pronounciation? Cheers! Gregory DG
I've always gone by the first pronunciation. "Care-a-teek-a"
Tempest
I used to pronouce it Car-Ra-Teka. I think the guy in the commercial was wrong. Tempest

Room 34
Is that as in the way a priest pronounces couples husband and wife? I always just say it like "karate" with "KAH" stuck at the end. kuh-RAH-tee-KAH But then again, I'm an idiot. This is off-topic, but what I really want to know is, how do you pronounce XYPE?
Csonicgo
zype? ksype? who knows.
Room 34
I usually give it that gutteral "kh" sound that is not really common in English, but occurs in languages like Russian and Hebrew. Chaunukkah, challah bread, etc.
Atariman
I usually pronounce it 'crap', but that's me. I was seriously going to put this in. I read the title and thought "I pronounce it 'crap'." beat me to the punchline
MegaData
Karate is the base word. Kah-rot-ick-ah
ZylonBane
I originally pronounced it "karra-tekka". But that sounded stupid even to me and I eventually fumbled my way to the rhymes-with-erotica pronunciation.
DracIsBack
I usually pronounce it 'crap', but that's me. Me too - at least on the 7800. The XE version is pretty good though!
nosweargamer
I found an excuse to dig up this thread after over ten years! While researching for the next episode of The Atari 7800 Game By Game Podcast, I found this video where the original creator discusses how to pronounce Karateka:
The Usotsuki
My personal opinion - and I do speak the language but not fluently - is that the ka-RA-te-ka is closer to how a Japanese person might pronounce it.
HammR25
Really cool necrobump. I didn't realize I pronouced Kotaku wrong until I watched one of their youtube videos.
Trebor
Since the old thread has risen from the grave...I'll quote and follow-up accordingly: The old Atari 7800 tv ads said "Care-a-teek-a" (soft a's) Correct! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_X4ZWtLYNLE There was no YouTube when the OP was created.

nosweargamer
Cool commercial. One on One Basketball, Choplifter and Midnight Magic have different screens from probably some computer version (Probably the same with some other games) and they still had the Deluxe with Asteroids. Jaynz
Care-Ah-Teek-Ah. No. In Japanese a syllable is a simple phonym of usually two letters. Ka ra te , for instance. The syllable "teek" is not part of their language. The 'k' is included with the last letter, making it 'ka - ra - te - ka'. Simple, guys, there's Bing and Google for this sort of thing.

Rybags
That ad is wrong. Karateka is pronouced much the same as karate, just a bit more emphasis on the e. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/karateka?s=t Dictionary has synthesied speech for words, click speaker icon after the word.
