After the project was cancelled, Bob Puff from CSS obtained the unit and unfortunately drilled holes to accommodate the hardware upgrades he did to the unit (2nd picture you mentioned). When I bought the unit from Bob, he took the upgrades out and put the unit back to original but then it had the 3 holes he drilled. Shame it was hacked up like that.
_The Doctor__
The holes could be level using sized hole compensation and then LED's with bezels or push button switched placed. That would make it look more professional. or The holes could be filled with color matched material and the texture recreated used acetone and texture mat.

My question would be... what was the mod that he removed and would it be beneficial to just install one? Given that the machine was a prototype anyway, we can just consider it part of the prototype's "evolution" to what could have been.

Knowing Bob Puff, it was probably something esoteric; and ultimately not easy to obtain in this day and age. Could probably put some LED's in there. Additionally to drilling holes in the case, they weren't drilled very much in line, either, which doesn't help the looks of it.

More like devolution, in this case. But, yeah, I'd probably just count it as part of the (unfortunate) history and leave it at that. At least he didn't take a hacksaw to it...
