Troubleshooting an XC11 Program Recorder (it's not the spring!)

So, I have an XC11 program recorder. It does not PLAY. Fast-Forward, Rewind, and even Record seem to work. 

 

I opened it up. Of course, the notorious spring and plastic cap had fallen off. I reattached them easily enough and tried again. I could see all three belts turning fine when I tried all the operations, except PLAY. When I press PLAY, nothing happens. No wheels spin.

 

Any ideas? I'm not an electronics person, unfortunately. So, I humbly ask for help.

It won't play until the computer asks it to.

press and hold start at power up then press return a few times, or type in a BASIC program line to turn on the motor.

Your play button already down, you will see it start to turn.

 

press PLAY and then POKE 54018,52      motor on

type POKE 54018,60     motor off press stop

Thanks, @_The Doctor__ and @chevymad! I was able to load Space Invaders and save a BASIC program.
