RMT Portamento help

I'm trying to get a portamento effect working that mimics the sliding of a guitar chord and/or the bending of a guitar string.

 

I can't seem to get it to work - not only with the distortion / sound I'm using, but also the way the pitch up sounds (you can hear the steps rather than a smooth slide).  I've heard other RMT songs do this with great effect, but I can't seem to make it happen.

 

I'm analyzing multiple songs to see how to implement it, and still it's not right, so I'm missing something.  Can someone explain the details on how it works and what parameters I need to play with?
