dhowerter
Hi I was wondering if you HAVE to use the paddles to play Kaboom! for the Atari 2600 OR if you can use a Joystick? Thanks
CPUWIZ
You need paddles to play it. http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html...wareLabelID=
Albert
You have to use the paddles. I like the paddle controllers as they give you a finer "analog" control than joysticks do. It's too bad there aren't a great number of paddle games. I'd like to see more homebrew games use paddles (I think SCSIcide is the only one). ..Al
jetset
My god why would you want to use joysticks???? If there is **any** game suited for the paddles, it's Kaboom!!!
bjk7382
Yeah, I don't know why paddles were so underused. I really like playing kaboom and tac-scan. And maybe even some circus atari. I haven't ever looked for it on this site but I found a joystick version of Circus atari. I think it is almost better than the paddle version. Maybe this is why they chose joysticks more, the games are just easier. I know I can't get over 4,000 in kaboom. circus_atari__joystick_.zip

Kaboom's difficulty ramps up pretty quickly, and it would be impossible to get very far with a joystick. The way the game is designed it really needs the analog nature of the paddle controller, as you can quickly position the buckets where they need to be. I do agree that paddle-based games like Kaboom! definitely require a fine degree of dexterity, but that's part of what makes Kaboom! fun and challenging. ..Al

bjk7382
I definitly think kaboom wouldn't be possible if it werent for paddles. But maybe some could have benifited from a joystick. And yet others like Spider Fighter could have benifited from paddles.
BassGuitari
How about a 2-3 player homebrew that uses a joystick AND paddles (simultaneously, 1 player use joystick, other guy use paddles)?
+cvga
Astroblast is the only game that I'm aware of that allows you to use either joysticks or paddles. What game is closest to playing Kaboom with a joystick? I'd have to vote gremlins. It has similar gameplay to Kaboom but uses a joystick. bjk7382
I know this doesn't go with the topic but if I buy a trackball can I use it with joystick games like centipede, or missile command. I just don't understand if they made thse trackballs, but no games specifically for them like paddles.
Goochman
The Atari 800 version gives you the opiton of sticks or paddles. Using sticks is impossible on the faster speeds

Godzilla
kaboom without paddles would be like spaghetti without pasta.
