One problem I see is the width: 104x4bit => 52bytes which is not dividable by 8.

Yes,  but the size in bytes. 104 pixels à 4 bit per pixel is 52bytes

I ran into this problem when I was playing around with JagStudio and using alternative graphics in some of the examples.

I should have made clear that I did figure out my graphic dimensions were the issue as @42bs stated.
