Question about legacy video modes when using IIGS with RGB monitor

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am about to get a IIGS RGB monitor (Apple brand) and was curious about how the GS emulates the legacy modes in RGB. Does the IIGS output composite when using legacy modes? Does it convert the legacy modes NTSC artifacts to RGB?

It produces composite video all of the time.  I used a monochrome monitor with mine for years...I had upgraded it from a IIe, and it took a while to get around to getting a color monitor.  8-bit ("legacy") modes work the same over this output as on the 8-bit models.  I don't recall if selecting "monochrome" in the Control Panel turns off the color burst in graphics modes; if there is a difference, it'd be there.  The text-color options (also in the Control Panel) have no effect on the composite output.

On the RGB output, you have a choice.  Selecting "color" translates the bit patterns into solid colors.  Selecting "monochrome" sends them along as-is.  Text is always sharp regardless of whether graphics modes are enabled or not, and it's rendered in whatever color combination you've selected in the Control Panel.
