Lauren Tyler
Better score... 9,360. Honestly, this seems more like an attempt to cash in on the G.I. Joe franchise while demonstrating a new (for the time anyway) graphics technique.
Keir
While I’d love to blame my jittery old paddles for my lackluster performance, I’m really just not very good at paddle games. 2

CapitanClassic
On 5/10/2024 at 1:25 PM, Lauren Tyler said: Steeplechase: 2:49 (How the hell did they get such a fast time?) Since you asked. The paddle controls the height of your jump. It has 4 positions (I think). At the lowest height, you are able to clear the small hedge. The longest hedge requires being at the highest height, and one of the 2 middle settings are required to clear the middle length hedges. The lower the jump height you have when successfully clearing a hedge, the earlier and faster your horse can sprint to the right of the screen. Missing any jump causes you to lose a significant amount of time, and move leftwards/backwards. Therefore it is vitally important that you keep you paddle close to the highest setting when you are near the right of the screen with little reaction time. In the early game, before the 2 speed ups though, you should be aiming to clear the hedges with the minimum possible jump height. I don't think I am anywhere near the shortest time possible, but I think I will do some testing in Stella and figure out the likely minimum time. Absalon
The manual says, that beginners should start training with leaving the height at max and just concentrate on the rhythm of the jumps. So did I! My score happened just like this (got 1:20 the most, than 1:18 and lower). Yesterday I got only 1:20. The opponents seem to have a certain amount of random crashes. So I guess you need both - a good run for yourself, and a bad for all the others.
CapitanClassic
With some hacking and code examination in Stella, I was able to get some approximate fastest times. I just changed the code that performs the crash handler into a no op. If you don’t ever jump, the minimum time is about 0:43 seconds. Then I performed some testing with spinning the paddle to the appropriate height, and jumping when a hedge came (not worrying about exact timing) and the computers always beat me, but their time was about 1:07 (min would have be about 1:10). It looks like the opponents adapt to good players by missing less. So I guess I was wrong about being close to the minimum time. Either that, or the ROM in the AFB5 is some prototype version that has different scoring/logic. Heres a crappy emulation score for GI Joe. CapitanClassic
Real hardware makes this game much easier. Still need to work on my timing for moving the shield into place, pressing fire to lock the block, and use that time to score hits on the snake 12,880 - 23,440 - GI Joe: Cobra Strike. Not sure if the second score counts. I think I found a glitch. If you kill Cobra during the warm up laser blast (possibly the first few frames at the start of the audio buildup), the audio will sound weird when the next level Cobra respawns. Also, the next Cobra will die after one hit. It looks like I got a huge point bonus too when that happened. (So probably a scoring glitch). Not a glitch... it is part of the scoring because it is listed in the manual as a 10,000 point bonus shot. 3
