Superman complete with Free Wallet!

Just thought I'd post a picture of this item in my collection.

I liked the post about the MASH game with the T-shirt recently and thought this would be of interest to show everyone.

It's a boxed Superman game with the sticker on the box for a free wallet. The wallet was packed inside the box under the cart, (you have to open the bottom flap to remove it), when I got this.

The wallet is mint and unused 8)

I had a second box with the sticker but the wallet was missing

Looking at the sticker on the box it says "Free with purchase-attached on back"

So it was supposed to be shrinkwrapped to the back of the box but not sure if all of them were actually packed like that.

The small box for the wallet sounds interesting. I'd love to see a picture of that! 8)

As far as I know, the Special Edition didn't have to do with the wallet. There were other Atari games that had the Special Edition logo on the box like Backgammon, Video Chess for example.

Superman comes with a box with the Special Edition logo and without. The ones without the logo seem to be for the picture label version of Superman.

The box I have with the Free Wallet sticker covers the Special Edition logo.

Correct. I don't think there was actually anything special about the special editions. No idea why Atari decided to release them like that.

the box version with the "special edition" banner on the front is the style for the original release for several 1979 titles including backgammon, basic programming, championship soccer, casino, video chess and superman. later re-releases of the same title had the front banner removed, but often kept the "special edition" info on the back of the box.

it could be that atari changed the packaging style when they changed box styles. i think the original "special edition" version had tuck-in flaps at the box top and bottom (no glue involved). that may have allowed the superman wallet to be packed inside the box easily. is that the kind of box you show in the first post of this thread. later superman boxes where the glue sealed at top and bottom, with that little hang tag that was glued down with the top flap (never understood the point of this little tag). if the manufacturing process glue sealed the bottom, it would be harder to insert the superman wallet, so they just shrinkwrapped it to the outside of the box.

also, is there a serial number on the yellow sticker somewhere, PRO 800? this was listed in one of the giant list of label variations, but i cannot make it out in the photo above.

I wonder if anyone's ever carried the Superman wallet while wearing the Mash shirt and the Pitfall backpack? Seriously that's a nifty item. As far as how it was packed with the Superman game, it seems like packing it inside the box would have been the most practical (less bulky and more pilfer-resistant).
