keyngs
The 2600 catalog #s are numbered in sequential order right? like Combat is 2601 Air Sea Battle is 2602 and so on..... I just realized this today. WOW
Tempest
The 2600 catalog #s are numbered in sequential order right? Well kinda. The first nine releases were actually all over the map: CX-2601 Combat CX-2602 Air Sea Battle CX-2603 Star Ship CX-2611 Indy 500 CX-2612 Street Racer CX-2621 Video Olympics CX-2641 Surround CX-2651 Blackjack CX-2661 Basic Math This is because Atari was originally planning on putting games of similar genres together. CX-2601 through CX-2610 would be Action titles, CX-2611 through CX-2620 would be racing games, CX-2650 through CX-2655 would be Gambling, CX-2661 through CX-2665 would be educational (BTW these numebrs aren't right but you get the idea, I don't have part list in front of me at the moment). However Atari abandoned this idea after the first year or so and started placing games in an almost sequential order after that (filling in holes where they had them). I actually did a fairly accurate analysis on this subject awhile back, I'll see if I can find it. Tempest
Room 34
I actually did a fairly accurate analysis on this subject awhile back, I'll see if I can find it. I would like to see that! BTW, I started a very short-lived thread on this topic way back when I first joined up (May 2002)... http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8230 But I never miss a chance to discuss this arcane topic, as for some reason I find it fascinating. Tempest
I'll see if I can dig it up, but if you look at the games released between 77 and 80 and then order then by part number, some obvious patterns jump out (all the gambling games clusterd around CX-2650, all the educational games clustered around CX-2660, etc.). It's actually kinda cool. Tempest
Keir
Here's another thread about it. It's kind of funny because Tempest mentions his old thread in that one too. http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8198
Clock
I always assumed they were in release date order too, I never really looked that close although I do log the numbers in my file I keep for my collection - I don't know why but numbers always facinate me. I look forward to your post containing your research Tempest
Tempest
Yes Ben put it exactly as I had in my old thread (which I think may have been on DP or something as I can't find it here). There are more patterns than that though, you just have to look. Keep in mind though that Atari abandoned this idea around 79-80 so after that they were fairly sequential.
