FWA - Fun with Art

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hello there o/

While going through the graphics archives, I found an interesting work from the Antic competition in FWA format.

image.png.62b9a599b3206dc142081bf6a1651ca4.png

A quick Google search revealed that this is a file from the editor "Fun with Art" by Epyx.

However, after downloading and running the editor, I still couldn’t open the image in it.

Then I decided to look for converters to other formats and found only MIC and BP.

Unfortunately, the result disappointed me, since after the transformation the transition colors were lost.

Modern editors on PeeCee, such as Graph2Font, Atari Graphics Studio and Atari Intrerlace Studio know nothing about this format and accordingly do not open it.

I just had a fixed idea to see this picture on a real atari.

The only confirmation that this is a real work is the file itself in FWA format and RECOIL, which also display this image correctly.

Any ideas on how to convert this format at least to XEX and run it in real life?

Or maybe there is a universal viewer for atari?

save as PNG, convert with 'ham_convert', links -> https://g2f.atari8.info/

Unfortunately it turned out to be too complicated, the actions are not clear and I am doing something wrong.

I select the required PNG file. I specify the atari mode 5 colors.

image.thumb.png.9339aee4b545bfadb2933284ba18084b.png

After that I click “convert” and get the result in preview.

image.thumb.png.decc2f7fea693ff4cd35574b120ba689.png

After the procedure is completed, the file _output.iff, _output.png, _palettes.png and _palettes_indexed.png appeared next to it.

It's not entirely clear what to do with all this, but okay, let's say *.iff is the desired ham.

I'm trying to get a result using the ham2mic.exe utility, but nothing comes out except errors :(

ham2mic.exe frame1_output.iff
BMP2MIC v1.8
Convert indexed BMP,PNG (8 bits per Pixel) to MIC.
Usage: ham2mic input_file [-p palette][-c color_map] [-r] [-h] [output_file]

another try

ham2mic.exe frame1_output.iff out.mic
BMP2MIC v1.8
Convert indexed BMP,PNG (8 bits per Pixel) to MIC.
Usage: ham2mic input_file [-p palette][-c color_map] [-r] [-h] [output_file]

and again

ham2mic.exe frame1_output.iff -p frame1_palettes.png out.mic
Exception EInOutError in module ham2mic.exe at 0006784F.
Read beyond end of file.

Maybe there is some step-by-step instruction on how to achieve the desired result?

Thank you very much in advance!

gomez.png -> 8bit per pixel + RESIZE to 160 pixel (+optional remap to ALTIRRA Palette) -> gomez_altirra.png

ham_convert: source_file = gomez_altirra.png ; mode = 'Atari 8-bit 4 colors per line' ; CIEDE (optional) ; palette source = external: JASC pal file/IFF image ; palette file = atari_8-bit_altirra

click button CONVERT -> output: gomez_altirra_palettes.png ; gomez_altirra_output.png

run @go.bat (bmp2mic == ham2mic)

bmp2mic -p altirra.act -c gomez_altirra_palettes.png gomez_altirra_output.png

it will create: MIC, COL, INV files -> gomez_altirra_output.mic ; gomez_altirra_output.col ; gomez_altirra_output.inv

run G2F -> load MIC -> second COL (INV in this case is unnecessary)

But that's a completely different image surely - not the one show at the top of the thread and not a FWA one (AFAIK that was a scrolling one that flickered two images to get more colours) - it may have been the winning entry actually...

...at your service !

- 4 ATR images with FWA pictures and loader/viewer

- 1 ATR image GRTOOL2.ATR with ML-converters (try OMILOAD.COM, it can display FWA pics)

- 1 ATR image PICCONV.ATR with BAS and ML-converters (try FWACONV.BAS and FUNCONV.COM and maybe all others)

- 1 ATR image G15PIC01.ATR with several FWA pics converted into standard Micropainter / 62 sectors pics (4 colours, no DLI's, thus most pics do not look good anymore)

1) Open *.mic in Graph2Font. Got very strange image 😃

2) Open AGAin *.col & got colors! It's Magic!!!

Thank you very much, now it's clear! \o/

I've tried various options already. It wasn't about FWA, but any other PNG images.

@tebe Is there any converter like bmp2mic, but with 5 color support?

For example, convert to MCH format?

For example, this image is converted perfectly in 5-color mode,

1_output.png.9e8a83f41b67b6396b8ce79f4178b043.png

but when you try to put it into the mic, it turns out crap.

resize to 160x240, 8bits per pixel

ham_convert, mode = 'Atari 8-bit 5 colors per line'

bmp2mic -p altirra.act -c filename_palettes.png filenam_output.png

This format is quite well known and described, in the Atariki's article http://atariki.krap.pl/index.php/FWA for instance (in Polish). Even TBXL example is available.
FWA block format is described too http://atariki.krap.pl/index.php/FWA_(format_bloku).

Edit: AtariFan had written viewer in Action! http://atari8.eu/2023/01/03/przegladarka-plikow-fun-with-art/ (Polish too).

Thanks for the clarification, it really helped solve the problem with the garbage on the screen. However, the colors are not so good as wished, unfortunately.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong again :(
