Anyone know the differences between the older 1200XL Rev 13A vs newer Rev A motherboards?

Recommended Posts

I have always wondered with such a short production run, why did Atari revise the 1200XL motherboard?  The older Rev 13A typically has a pink audio coil and the later Rev A typically has a red audio coil.  Does anyone know what's different between the two?  I own both and they appear to function the same. I figure someone on AA might know the details on what changed.

Afaik from reading docs 13A became A.  That is an interesting color observation.  Where both US made?

So you're saying that they are identical, just revised the version name?  The newer Rev A motherboards tend to have the "ATMC" Made in Taiwan triangular sticker on outside of the black heat sink.  The older 13A boards do not (Made in USA?).

There are three known 1200XL boards in the wild:

11A  (PILOT RUN Boards)
13A Production
A Production

Note that 12A seems to be missing...hmmm..

Anyhow...

My assertion that 13A = A comes from this:

From: SOVEY 28-JAN-1983 08:58
To: SOVEY
Subj: project numbers

Kenn, 1-28-83

With regard to project numbers, I have received the number for
the cost reduced and enhanced 1200 (the 1201 - 4P3083 right?).
But, I have not gotten the number for the international 1200
which will be a change to the current rev. A (old rev 13A)
board.

This project has already been started by my group but the
new project leader, in response to current policy, will be
John Protsman of the international group. I tell you this
since it may effect whether you want to issue a HCD number to
the project after all.

The current status of the project is that a schematic has been
completed and PCB design has started to implement the changes.
I don't currently plan any further activity on the project
except possibly as a subcontract from John. I don't think
this is likely since we have our hands full with the 1201.

Please send me the project number as soon as you decide
whether or not to issue one. Also, if there is a list of
active project numbers with descriptions around, a copy of
it would be useful and appreciated.

Thanks,

I think I have 5 or 6 boards I can check.  Two were in complete machines, the others were spare PCBs I acquired along the way.  I'll try to take a peek at them tomorrow.
