Coleco Sound I?

Mindfield

Recommended Posts

I just got my CIB Gemini today. It appears to be a later release when Coleco was trying to really grab some of Atari's market share as it included not one, but two pack-ins (Donkey Kong and Mouse Trap). On the back of the box, it shows what seems to be Coleco's version of the KidVid "controller" ("Coming Soon") -- basically it's a tape deck that plugs into the VCS (or Gemini of course) and plays KidVid games (and apparently was to be bundled with Bearnstien Bears). Did Coleco ever release this?

Well, if you look at the packaging for Bearnstein Bears, it shows a generic cassette player hooked up to a Gemini. The one on the back of the Gemini box is definitely not the same thing. Furthermore, it's not called KidVid; it's called the Sound I module.

Here's a scan of that portion of the box:

Perhaps, since this is "coming soon" it's just a sort of working name for KidVid? (The "Bearnstein Bears Play 'n Learn" also appears to be different, since the released version is simply called "Bearnstein Bears.") The AA database doesn't have an image for the actual KidVid, so I can't compare.

the actual kid vid is visually identical to any of the long rectangular tape decks they had back then w/ all the 'mic/rem/etc' ports on them, except it has a silver kid vid tag on it. it was identical to a panasonic tape deck my parents had bought me a few years ago. probably part of the reason i returned it as a kid.
