tyranthraxus
I've decided I'm going to give one of my extra 2600s to a friend of mine. And was wondering what games I should include with it? Looking though my doubles stack I will give him: Asteroids, Centipede, Combat, Frogger, Keystone Kapers, Missile Command, Pitfall, Spiderman, Qbert & Yars Revenge. Thats a pretty good collection to start with IMHO and exhausts most of my spares that I have on hand that I think are fun. But I was wondering if there are any surefire hits I should pick up to get him started. One thought that comes to mind is that there are no paddle games - Video Olympics or Warlords would be a good addition. Any suggestions? jetset
KABOOM! Circus Atari is a good paddle game also.
sku_u
Defender, Space Invaders, Atlantis, Phoenix, Centipede, Demon Attack, Demons to Diamonds, Indy 500 w/driving controllers, Moon Patrol, Berzerk, Midnight Magic, River Raid, Breakout, Super Breakout, Defender II/Starship, Jr. Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Fast Eddie, Kool Aid Man, Moonsweeper, Mountain King, and Pitfall II are all great games that are on the common side for someone just getting into the VCS. Cootster
Others . . . Galaxian, Stampede certainly, E. T. (hey, they might like it if they're someone used to insanely complicated modern-console stuff, but giving them a copy of the manual from here is a must), Sprint Master, Casino/Poker Plus/Blackjack, any single good homebrew would make a nice Festivus gift and also lead them to discover that, well, people are still making new stuff, and nobody mentions the simple goodness that is Adventure? Shame. I started collecting as a player, I still keep that in mind, and these above lists are most of what I have, actually, why, because the games are cool . . . And always will be . . . You can take your 3D fad genre of the month (with current trends, I'm amazed no one's done Custer's Revenge 3D with multiple rape-and-pillage missions yet. Whatever happened to Mystique anyway? Didn't the same people do unlicensed NES stuff under another name?) and cram it in a big jar of belly back gristle lumps, as far as I'm concerned . . . Everytime I see one, I think "It's just with a bunch of fancy crap tacked on." Take Downhill Domination for an example. Great fun, yes, but it's just the BMX bit from Cali Games (another good newbie cart, IMO) in 3D with the addition of other riders, separate that section off the main CG Rom, add that and some variant on the combat from the new game and wham! A greatly improved classic that kicks some whippersnapper tail . . .
DeAnges
I say berzerk, circus atari, demon attack, centipede, or grand prix. All those I think are surefire hits for a newbie! -DeAnges-
Brad2600
Pitfall II, Tapper, Gopher, Megamania and Kaboom! A newbie should try and acquire these games.
bjk7382
I think HERO and spider fighter should be in any collection too.
tyranthraxus
I think HERO and spider fighter should be in any collection too. Since I don't have those two yet, I think he'll have to wait Good suggestions, I know what to aquire. I mainly want to give him some of the top arcade conversions. Since that is what Atari is really best know for. I hope to get him hooked by giving him some choice games. John

Brad2600
If you want a newbie to break their wallet, then these games would be ideal.
pheedback
*Classic* Space Invaders, Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man, Combat, Asteroids, Defender, Frogger, Q*bert, Donkey Kong, and Centipede. *Fun Factor* Spy Hunter, Frostbite, or Empire Strikes Back *Sports* Basketball or Boxing, Hockey, Baseball
Room 34
I think the original set tyranthraxus has proposed giving his friend is a good place to start. Since he mentioned a lack of paddle games, I would like to focus on those. As far as I'm concerned there are basically only 4 paddle games you need to own: Kaboom!, Circus Atari, Warlords (great multiplayer action!) and Super Breakout. In that order. chairmonkey4406
pac man is a must NOT. Armor Ambush, basically any M Network game, HERO, Enduro, Space Shuttle, (now that I think of it, pretty much any Activision game) Video Olympics, Surround, and I think Quadrun would be pretty easy to track down
Megamaniac
...and I think Quadrun would be pretty easy to track down Yea, I've got a few lating around I wanted to get rid of...I thought about tossing them in the river.
Megamaniac
Buying a "lot" of games on eBay might be the best way to get your friend up and running with a good selection. But...you knew that!
tyranthraxus
Space Invaders is one I overlooked. Good game that definatly says ATARI I think I will also add Ms Pacman. I don't want to give him any crap games. Once I've successfully converted him to collecting then I'll let him experience the dregs
