That is the beauty of these types of chairs. The back can be installed either way. I personally like it the way Rick installed it. I am going on the hunt for a chair for myself tommorow so my wife can make me one. I have to fix her embroidery machine for her first as it broke down You should've seen the christmas stockings she embroidered for the NWCGE staff. They were awesome. Yes! i can't even count how many 10+ hr long gaming sessions i played in this chair. a good 2 player buddy of mine gave this chair to me about 10 years ago..
