Track and Field

I have recently picked up this game as well as a sealed Track and Field controller that was issued with the C64 disk version. I have been told that the controller is the same for every console's version of this game and that a controller that came with the C64 Atarisoft version will work just fine with the Atari 8 bit version.

The problem is, this controller seems to have a mind of it's own. The game works fine with a regular Wico stick but when I use this TF controller, the game controls are wacky and it doesn't work the way it is supposed to. Can anyone tell me if this game is similar to Missle Command in that you have to tell the machine what controller you are using before you start a game or is it possible that my controller/cart is messed up?

Thanks.

I opened it up and everything looked OK. I was able to isolate the problem to the jump button. Seems like it is always being pushed when it actually is not.

This thing is new old stock - never taken out of the box and just pulled out of the shrink wrap this afternoon. One would think it would work perfectly. The cable was wound up in one of those black twist tie thingies. Could this have killed the cable?

Yeah, it sounds like the cable may be going out. Probably from being wrapped for so long. You can test it with a continuity/ohm meter. If it is the cable you should be able to snag one from a standard Atari joystick.
