keilbaca
Hey all, i just purchased a trakball, I was wondering if it works on all joystick games, and does it give as much control as say like the centipede trackball.
Tsukasa
No, it doesn't work on joystick games, I think it acts like a driving controller. But of course, this all depends on the type of trackball it is. If trackballs did work on joystick games, then there would be no reason for the trackball hack of missile command....

bjk7382
If trackballs did work on joystick games, then there would be no reason for the trackball hack of missile command.... The two atari trackballs will work on all joystick games in "joystick mode" which just emulates the joystick. So in missile command with a trackball in joystick mode the cursor will still move exactly as fast as it did with a joystick. When you use a trackball with missile command TB it will move exactly as it did in the arcade I think the reason atari made no trackball specific games is because they couldn't make a game joysick and trackball together, and they didn't want to limit the sales of the game to just people that owned a trackball. So they did the next best thing and made all thier games joystick compatible and then made a trackball with a joystick mode.
Tsukasa
Joystick mode?
bjk7382
I don't own them, but I believe there is a switch to put it in joystick or trackball mode. The missile command hack is the only 2600 game to actually use the trackball mode (and some games on the 8-bit computers)

Danno
I just got one as well. There are Two Atari Trackball models, the CX-22 and the CX-80. I don't know that there are major differences besides cosmetics. They BOTH have a switch for joystick/trackball mode. What I'd like to find is a way to use the CX-80 I just bought in "trackball mode" as a mouse on the PC, so I can use it in MAME and MESS. I suppose you'd have to build an adaptor to PS/2 or USB to make it work, but I'm clue less with that stuff. Anyone?
keilbaca
LOL the funny thing was that i was gonna try to convert a mouse to a trakball for the atari... lol i dunno how to do it and i was gonna ask but i just got the trakball... so i have no need to now. If you don't have a PIC programmer, I would suggest jdm. It's basically a copy of COM84......

Danno
apparently you missed the part of my post where I said "I'm clueless". about this stuff.
Tsukasa
Oh, oops! I meant to post that only once, and it was meant to be a response to keilbaca's last post......
StanJr
I saw a Wico Trak-ball this past weekend and I couldn't find a joystick switch on it. Does it have one?

Tsukasa
So, then does the CX22 only work in trackball mode?
